Alexis Rivera No Longer With WSVN

WSVN morning anchor Alexis Rivera is no longer with WSVN, SFLTV just learned. Rivera, who joined 7News in 2011 as reporter, got promoted to Today In Florida co-anchor when Richard Lemus left in February 2012. Details are a bit foggy, she either did not have her contract renewed or management decided to take advantage of the opt out clause in Rivera’s contract. The clause is in effect once every two years, and allows either the talent or the TV station to end the contract for any reason without penalty.  Also management may have offered Alexis Rivera the opportunity to go back to her reporting job but she allegedly declined.

Come Monday, Danielle Knox will be joining Christine Cruz and Diana Diaz at the desk.

WPLG Meteorologist Walt Cronise Dies at 90

Uncle Walt has died.

Longtime WPLG meteorologist Walt Cronise passed away at his home in Jacksonville on September 20. After a 25 year career forecasting the weather in the Navy, and a stint with the Hurricane Hunters, he joined WPLG in 1968 as a freelance weather forecaster when the station was still known as WLBW. Just a year later they promoted him to chief meteorologist.

Known to many as Uncle Walt, viewers knew him for his sharp forecasting skills, and for those oft promoted “fearless forecasts… rain or shine”. The bow tie was his symbol, earning him the nickname “The bow tie weather guy”, as were those pet names he gave thunderstorms – like toad stranglers, and swimming pool fillers. Through the years Cronise worked alongside legendary Ann Bishop, and later Dwight Lauderdale until he retired in December 1992.

Walt Cronise is survived by his wife Dorothy, five children, seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. The family asks memorials in his name to be sent to Wounded Warrior Project or the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod World Relief

WPLG aired a nice tribute this evening, here’s the video:

Video: The One Feature Coming to the Refreshed WSVN Newsplex

WHDH Boston, WSVN’s sister station, went live today with the newsroom refresh they had been working on since early August. That animated strip you see running along the second floor of the studio is what WSVN is also installing in the newsplex. The rest of the plex refresh will have its own look, which includes more monitors, and the complete replacement of the wall of television sets behind the news anchors, it’s been there since the 90s! New graphics are also coming.

WSVN is shooting for a full set reveal in time for November sweeps which begin October 30.
