TV director interviews at a TV station, they ask if he ever directed or shot car chases. He tells them that he did even though it wasn’t true. Director goes home, shoots and edits his own car chase, then sent this video to station management.
In case you’re wondering, he didn’t get the job.
The 38TH Annual Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards were held the Westin Beach Resort last week, giving out gold statuettes in 55 categories to TV folk from stations all around Florida, Georgia to Puerto Rico.
Our own WFOR walked away with the most awards of any station. They had 22 nominations, the third most nominated station behind WJAN and WSCV who went home with 7 and 8 awards respectively.
WFOR chief meteorologist Craig Setzer, along with Howard Bernstein, and Angela Travieso won in the weather category for weather coverage with their hurrican special Hurricane 2014: Surviving the Season.
But it was CBS 4 reporter David Sutta who brought home the gold, winning 9 awards alongs with his colleagues. CBS4’s Michelle Gillen and her crew won 3 Emmys and CBS4 Production Manager John Mays received the Chapter’s Governors’ Award.

South Florida viewers gobbled up all the NFL coverage they could last week, according to the Sun Sentinel’s Johnny Diaz. The network you rarely watch but pay through the nose for (ESPN) came in at number one with 309,000 local viewers followed by WSVN in second place with 220,000 for the NFL game on FOX. Channel 10 and NBC 6 won the weekend with Saturday and Sunday Night Football, ranking third and fourth overall for the week of December 1 through 7th.
WFOR squeezed in 6th place with 60 Minutes at 173,000 thousand viewers and some telenovelas made the most watched list as well.
By the way, almost nobody cared to watch Peter Pan Live on WTVJ. The androgynous green boy, and daughter of NBC newscaster Brian Williams, couldn’t skip past the 91,000 viewers that tuned in. Which if our math is correct is (at most) 5% of the viewers in Miami-Fort Lauderdale.
WPLG is getting in on the help-a-viewer wagon with a new segment named ‘Call Christina’. The new feature, similar to WSVN’s Help Me Howard, would be headlined by Local 10 reporter, and Miami native, Christina Vazquez with local attorney Aldo Leiva giving the legal advice to viewers who seek help with a problem.
Local 10 has raised Vazquez’ profile ever since she joined the station in 2011, giving her several high-profile assignments. Like being one of only a handful of reporters with a court room seat at the George Zimmerman trial. And recently even sending her as far away as Singapore to report on a Malaysian company which plans to bring the way it does business to South Florida. She has also won several awards throughout her career for her investigative features.
In regard to the similarities of ‘Call Christina’ with WSVN’s Help Me Howard segment, that shouldn’t be very surprising. SFLTV already reported that Emily Barr, President of WPLG’s former parent company, wanted Channel 10 to be more like 7, and of course 10’s general manager used to work at WSVN. But the new segment also harkens back to the days when WPLG called itself “Your Problem Solvers Station”.
Call Christina is set to air Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 pm.

After 14 years covering sports for WFOR, sports anchor Kim Bokamper is calling it quits. The former Dolphins player says he’s retiring from the TV biz to spend more time with his daughters, and to take some time to travel and see the world.
In an announcement released by the station, Bokamper says “I will miss the people that I’ve worked with in the sports community, I’ll also miss the excitement of covering the sports scene here in South Florida, which has been such a big part of my life for as long as I can remember.”
Bokamper has covered sports for WFOR since 2000 when he joined as the Sunday through Thursday sports anchor for the 5, 6, and 11 pm newscasts. He is the second high-profile sportscaster in Miami to retire, NBC 6 sports director Joe Rose is set to sign off from WTVJ this month.
Bokamper’s last day at WFOR will be sometime in January.
