Happy Birthday to WSVN morning anchor Diana Diaz who doesn’t look a day over 30. Proof what true beauty sleep (said to be from 9pm to 2am) can do for you. Which means for the night owls among us, like me typing this at 12:59am, there’s no hope.

Over the weekend at a charity gala at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, WSVN Sports Director Steve Shapiro was honored with the Sonny Hirsch Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award. The award honors “an outstanding sports broadcaster that has had a great impact in his field as well as his or her accomplishments within our community.”
The event, Call of the Game Dinner, organized by sports broadcasters Eric Reid and Tony Fiorentino, benefits Lauren’s Kids, an organization aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. And DSAF, the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation.
Steve Shapiro shared the moment with some of his WSVN colleagues. WSVN anchor Craig Stevens attended, along with meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez and her husband, WSVN Sr. Executive Producer Darcy Tannebaum, WSVN investigative producer Danny Cohen, and sports reporter Donovan Campbell and his wife.
Shapiro was among quite a company of honorees too. Miami Heat star LeBron James was awarded the Don Shula Sports Legend Award, Heat player James Jones received the Ted Arison Community Service Award, and former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was awarded the Jim Mandich Courage & Commitment Award, congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz accepted on her behalf.
Other local broadcasters to receive the Sonny Hirsch Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award are WTVJ sports director Joe Rose in 2012, and Jim Mandich in 2011.

WPLG morning anchor Jason Martinez announced this morning on his Facebook wall that he anchored his last newscast today. The news as a since Martinez has become popular with viewers since joining Local 10. The reasons for his departure however are personal, Martinez is moving back to California because he wants to be closer to his two young sons.
Martinez joined WPLG in 2011 from KTLA in California. You may remember he blogged his week-long cross-country trip to South Florida with his wife and kids on Local10.com. About a year later though he divorced, and his ex-wife and two sons moved back to California.
No word yet on where he got a new gig, but we’ll hear soon enough about it.
WTVJ Chief Meteorologist John Morales had a presentation at TEDxCoconutGrove a few days ago titled Forecasting Trust: Just Me, The Camera and Thousands Behind The Lens. In the roughly 11 minute talk Morales takes a look at how TV meteorologists connect with the audience, and why that’s so important.
