VIDEO: Daily Show dogs WTWO weather commercial

Daily Show spoofs Indiana TV station

update: WTWO has responded, unoficially to The Daily Show with what’s supposedly an internal promo

That’s the weather promo:
Ok Jason I’ll let you have this on – it’s not that stupid, but I’m still not buying it. I like it in terms of pace and graphics, it’s simple, and not too cheap looking considering the market size. Good pace, not too slow. Still wouldn’t make me watch them more because of 15 years extra experience. I mean Brian Norcross is the shizzle here, and when I listened to him as Wilma was passing over he said the worst of had passed, 2 minutes later the roof tile started getting ripped one by one.

  1. Wait wait wait, admin! Have you had a chance to see the whole promo? It’s not stupid at all! In fact, I thought it was great! Really well done, especially for market 150.

I’m a college student studying journalism (in a completely different city) and this promo was all the buzz amongst my friends and at the local NBC affiliate when it came out.

None of us had ever seen a station just slam another one like that. They basically gave WTHI a giant middle finger and it was great. And the thing about it is that it’s true! Every radar had a “dead zone” and often stations avoid putting the doppler in the downtown area so that there aren’t people left without coverage.

I’ve heard that WTHI tends to be more of the ratings leader so WTWO took advantage of a great opportunity to point out two flaws at WTHI, including there loss of power during some severe weather on April 2nd.

If you haven’t already, watch the whole promo… it left everyone I know with their jaw dropped applauding WTWO for having the balls to call out WTHI. Way to go WTWO!

  2. It is still a farce.

A station could still make the claim of 45 years of combined experienced with a recent graduate and a longtime old fart. WTVJ kept Weaver for how many years and after how many strokes? The man could hardly talk when he left. But, they could claim his “extensive” history.

btw, to mention history when it comes to weather is interesting. Weather reports are so technology based today, why would it matter that a met could tell you what creation was like?

  3. I’m with Jason. This is a balsy promo made by an underdog station with very little to lose. I thought it was well-produced. And it’s got people talking, which was part of what it was supposed to do. And the internal response promo wasn’t bad either.

  4. Agreed. It was well done. but, to say that at station with so called more experience because they add it all together is number crunching and total bs.

But, the ad worked…look how many people have viewed and are talking about it.

  5. That’s more childish than ballsy. Maybe WTWO’s a tad bitter about being stuck at #2, it’s like when the poor tomboy wins a beauty contest and the rich snobby girl screams “HOW COULD SHE WIN??? I’M BETTER THAN HER!!!!” WAAAH, WAAAH, WAAAH, we lost in the ratings again, WAAAH!. Their response to Stewart was pretty funny, though.

There’s only 1 time I could ever remember a local station here going after the competition. That was in 1995 when channel 10 slammed it’s competitors (channel 7 in particular, but I think what was then WTVJ-4 and WCIX-6 were also doing it) for airing the OJ trial live during the 5PM news hour. Even then they didn’t name any station, rather they just said something like..”look at what we’re showing at 5 O’Clock (images of local and national news events) then look at what our competition is showing (a clip of Judge Ito’s courtroom). Watch channel 10 Eyewitness News at 5…”. I’ll admit I was sick of OJ, and glad 10 had gone back to doing local news. And they were still doing very well in the ratings back then.

One last musing, if the rest of the city is without power in a severe thunderstom/tornado outbreak, how is WTWO’s doppler radar going to help them, unless they have a radio partner they can broadcast over?

Going back to my first comment, if I was running WTHI, I’d produce a response promo with my lead met looking at WTWO’s promo on a monitor with a sound effect of a baby crying playing, and have the met look directly at the camera and say “Oh grow up!”. One diss track deserves another.

  6. I’m glad this has started some conversation. Thanks for the credit, admin… and Murrow.

I really have respect for everyone’s comments. Perhaps you’re right, the combined experience is a bit of a farce… but I still love the doppler dead zone part.

As for childish? I mean come on! All news is about doing promos about why you’re better than everyone else… but true it’s only seldom that stations call the competition by name.

It looks like they pulled the promo off their website… but that rebuttal to Jon Stewart… CLASSIC!
