7’s new graphics, not yet

I don’t think they’re going to get out the new graphics. It appears that finishing the newsplex is first on the agenda. The weather set is almost done, a new stand-up area with monitors and a new news desk are next. Plus sweeps are on.

There’s new weather graphics but no info on when they’ll slip them in.

So the truth is we know nothin’ about nothin’, everything will happen when it does

  1. i wonder if their ratings will take a hit this sweeps since people are tired of watching the same-‘ol stale product…

  2. there has never ever been a spike in viewership at any station (or a sudden drop in viewership) as a result of a new set, graphics or music. Trust me — I love those things as much as anybody, but 7’s ratings aren’t going to fall as a result of that stuff. Content and anchors are much more important. Belkys is much more of a hindrance than stale lower thirds.

  3. Well, technically up here in Boston we did see somewhat of a viewer uproar when WCVB introduced a new graphics and Frank Gari music package back around 1995. The cut of the “Image News” package they started to use was very harsh and quite loud, by Channel 5 standards. It was introduced on a Monday at 5pm and the station immediately received several THOUSAND complaint calls regarding the volume level and tempo of the new theme. By the following Monday, the station changed the opens to a much more mellow cut of the same Image News theme. It even made the local Boston papers… I kid you not.

From what I know, WSVN has been pretty steady in the ratings for years. I agree with you about viewers watching for anchors and content (maybe that’s why WTVJ is in last? 😉 ).

Also, people were pretty PO’ed when WPVI introduced a custom version of their theme back in 1997. Shows how deeply viewers care about heritage stations.

  5. I’m aware of the WPVI switch. Viewers were upset, but did they stop watching? Would they have stopped watching? I’m not sure. Like you said, those are very old stations with very rich histories — a pretty rare situation overall.

  6. Well guys if you really think about it people watch the news to get the news for the day they want to be updated with whats going with mainly 3 things: Locally, nationally and internationaly. People just want there news not some fancy shmancy logo and music and all that crap now the only people that look for that are two types of people: talent scouts/sweeps whatever and two people like us. But in closing of my two cents, people just want the news not staring at a 7 spinning for 15 seconds. Or at a News Today spinning and flying around like a dodo bird for 7 seconds (which is pretty nice by the way)

  7. I disagree. Take a look at TVJ. They *just* give the news, and they literally put me to sleep. Although one wants news, you also want the news in a way that keeps you interested and entertained. That’s why (in my opinion) 7 has always stayed at the top. Their flashy graphics and overall style keep the viewers entertained and watching, as opposed to boring them to the point that they change the channel.

  8. I understand that but like I said people out there just want the news they dont want high flashy graphics you know in the morning people just grap their cup of coffee, 7 news, and boom their out the door (like the today in florida promo hehe) but people even just watch the teases of the stories and then they will try to catch it TVJ over the radio (as you may know they have 88.7 and broadcasts NBC feeds) but I still stick with my guns and you know what people like you and I DJB are going to be looking for the flashy very nice graphics and new sets and music and stuff but for people just wanting to see whats going on with their community around them and thats my two cents.

  9. Speaking of themes, don’t anybody know who produced WSVN’s main theme? I always liked the way the theme sounded. Another theme I like very much is the Hurricane/Severe Weather theme. I know it by heart now because of the last 2 rather active hurricane seasons.

  10. Well they are doing a hell of a job with all different themes. I can replay almost all of them in my head by heart. LOL. Nobody has any MP3’s of anything do they?

  11. nobody has an original cut of the current theme to my knowledge. And even if they did, I doubt anyone would just offer it as an MP3 🙂
