  1. I’m living in Lake Worth, where power STILL hasn’t gone out as of 10:20pm Thursday. Anyway, I was shocked to read that the “News” station became the “Dark” station. I think I also read WFOR was “running on power”, which fltv claimed meant running on generators. Even the most aggressive news channels in the Miami DMA lose to an even more aggressive force of nature. What are the odds?

  2. I was watching American Morning on CNN this morning and they were talking about the outage at “CNN Miami Affiliate WSVN” they showed video of the plex where it seemed that only one or 2 computers and emergency lights were the only things working. It showed Tom Haynes talking how he never has seen the station lose power in all his years there, but also they never were hit by the wall of a hurricane.

Admin- do you have any video that you can post of the power problems?

  3. It couldn’t have happened to a better station.

WSVN’s tabloid news is stupid. Thank goodness I was able to pick up WFLX FOX 29 when I lived there.

  4. 7 is the best in Miami. anyway, i am watching the live stream online and it is showing chopper images but it says “wsvn/wplg” are they providing chopper shots to local 10?

  5. I’m over on the other coast and can’t believe how poorly the TV stations fared from this minimal storm. Didn’t they learn anything from Andrew? I didn’t watch much of WFOR’s coverage, but it looks like Norcross got to hide in the closet again, although this time it was because of a pretty major roof failure. Pathetic.

Over here, Hurricane Charley came & went. We lost one sat dish (big deal), and of course the live trucks needed a little bit of TLC when they came back in, but we stayed on the air. Full generator power (including AC), along with a second generator brought in which can also carry the full load of the building. Roofs are well maintained, generators are tested at least once a week in hurricane season. If there’s any thunderstorms predicted, we usually switch over to generator power well before any newscast to ensure there are no interruptions during the newscasts.

  6. Wow!! I can’t believe that! I wasn’t watching 7. I’m without power right now. I got amazing footage of this power box thing in my backyard exploding and I sent it to all the news stations. It was on cbs4! But I never got to see it because I was watching stupid channel 6! Man I would love to see that American Morning stuff from CNN. I’m so surprized. We’ve got no cable right now. I’m running the computer, DSL and the tv off of a generator.

  7. Dean the power box if it’s what Im thinking got played a few times on CBS4.
Interestingly, I was going to record it and post it here 🙂

And I have recorded the WSVN video from the plex of them in the dark but Im having problems converting it and will post it asap

  8. dean…
my dvr might have the american morning thing on it from this morning, if i do i will try to post it over the weekend (maybe monday) if i dont i wish i did. 🙂 hope none of your stuff got fried.

  9. Admin-

one more question, can you capture one of the svn commerical breaks that has the “hurricane theme”, i want to extract the audio and play around with it, i think i can come up with an interesting hybrid of both this music and the normal music

  10. Mike, I too noticed that it said “WPLG/WSVN”. I switched back and forth a few times between 7 and 10 earlier today, and both were switching back and forth between the choppers. 7 was in Ft. Lauderdale and 10 was in Homestead. So I’m guessing they were working together on this.

  11. Admin-
Wow! Thats so cool that you wanted to put it on here! I got so many calls about that video! Did you ever get it? Because I’d like to know what they said about it. I heard one of them on the radio but it was around 1AM and I think it was the last time they aired it. I never got to see it on TV though 🙁

Here is the actual video file that I sent them:

Channel 6 actually replyed to my e-mail to them asking for it in another format. So I sent it again today but it never made it on the air. All well, I’m still excited that it made it on Ch. 4!

  12. Mike-
Thanks! Nope none of my stuff got fried, my power didn’t even go out because of it because the lines in my backyard are not for my house. It’s not even my power grid. Strange I know… but our lines are underground and come from somewhere else.

  13. Dean, duuude that’s what Im talkin about. CBS4 had it on at least twice that I saw it. First time I saw it they replayed it, I believe may be wrong, 2-3 times in a row.

Good job dude you’re now officially a citizen journalist 🙂

  14. That’s so cool I really wish I could have seen it!
I’m going to start filming more stuff for the news 🙂

    haha
