CBS Emphasises Non-News Sharing With ‘NewsCentral’ Re-brand in LA

9

Saw @standupkid (a.k.a. Mark Joyella) tweet this B&C story on CBS renaming it’s local stations in Los Angeles.

KCBS and independent KCAL will be re-branded to CBS2 NewsCentral and KCAL 9 NewsCentral by this fall. CBS says it’s doing the re-brand to emphasize its duopoly’s news gathering power and ‘improved and more consistent focus on local news coverage’. The fact that rival stations KTTV-FOX, KNBC and Tribune-owned KTLA have entered into a news gathering pool to share resources and cut costs has something to do with the re-brand.

Whether the ‘NewsCentral’ moniker will spill out to other markets remains to be seen, CBS says additional details will be announced this summer.

So does that mean then that if WFOR, WTVJ and say WPLG enter a news sharing agreement then CBS is not committed to ‘improved and more consistent focus on local news coverage’ in Miami?

  1. I remember when WCBS had the “CBS 2 Information network” brand in early 2000’s, it was great looking and the content it had was really informative, sadly it didn’t work for the uptight bitches in NYC, maybe KCBS will have better results than its sister station in the east.

  2. LA= more people and more $ to be made. Miami= who cares to CBS. The name change sounds dumb because they have similar graphics, logos, and website. The top of their website has the KCBS and KCAL logos with the “are always on” moniker.

KTTV is ehh when it comes to news.

KTLA is great but could be better if the anchors were not as dumb as a 5th grader (pun totally intended).

Personally I like KABC cause they are committed to news. Most of the newscasts expect for the 6 and 11 newscasts are 60 minutes.

      • If anything our intelligence levels are the same. Miami is no better than LA when it comes to intelligence.

LA has cool people too. Our community is way more diverse than Miami. I cannot even count with my fingers how many cultures are represented here.

        Miami… I counted 6 major cultures.

  3. Hmmm. KCBS used to brand its newscasts as “Action News” years ago.

It remains to be seen if the proposed “NewsCentral” branding will click with Southern California viewers. If the branding doesn’t go over well, I could picture KCBS (and KCAL) re-adopting the “Action News” branding. Just a thought.
