Tony Segreto joined the WTVJ news team when he was just 18 years old. Now, 40 years later, Tony Segreto is saying goodbye to the South Florida airwaves after a lifetime of dedication to TV News. In a written statement released on nbc6.net, Tony talks about how working in TV news has always been a dream of his.

This promo has been running for about two weeks:

Tony, who is married with two children, says he’s not going anywhere except off your television set. He has stated that he wishes to remain in South Florida throughout his retirement. Tony’s commitment to his community has been clearly demonstrated through his personal involvement in South Florida. He is one of the few legends left in South Florida. All this week, NBC6 is paying tribute to Tony every night on the 6PM newscast. His final day is January 9th. We have been informed that a successor for him has been named, but this is really Tony’s time and week… So we’ll announce more information on his replacement at the end of the week. Stay tuned.

I know I speak for all of South Florida when i say “Thank You, Tony.” He has been there for South Florida in some of our toughest times, and for that, we thank him. Goodbye Tony, and have a wonderful retirement. You will be missed!

  1. Tony is a real class act. It’s great to see these clips and learn how much he’s done for this community in his 40 years in TV.

I did find it odd that he wasn’t anchoring the 6 p.m. newscast – Joel and Julia were (Tony showed up at the end)… kind of weird to not work in your regular role your last week on the job??

    Congrats to him!

    • I found that a little bit weird too… I’m looking into it, but I’m guessing they are just phasing Tony out, and trying to get the audience used to a new face.

  2. The reason Tony wasn’t anchoring is because he is officially retired and can’t anchor if he no longer works for the company. He will be on every show for the story about him, but that’s all NBC will allow.

  3. Thats BS, hes worked there for 40 years, he can sit on the set in his chair, but he cant anchor the last week of his own newscasts, thats is just wrong on so many levels. The NBC people have some nerve.

  4. I thought his last newscast was scheduled for Jan. 9. That’s what they said in November when he announced his retirement. When was his true last day? In December?

    • His last true day was December 31st. He was scheduled to work till January 9th, and from what i’ve heard, it was a surprise to most that he wasn’t going to be able to.

  5. The timing really is kind of weird. I am sure they didn’t want to do his big sendoff during a time when many people are on vacation and would miss it.

The bad timing means that the poor man has to suit up to do the dog and pony show every day this week – and not get paid!

Loretta – I think Joel Connable is taking Tony’s spot at 6 p.m.; Joel was already on the 7 p.m. broadcast with Jackie when DeMarco left a few weeks ago.

  6. So let me get this straight–Tony can’t go on air, but Yvette Miley still has a job? Maybe NBC thinks they can sell the station if it’s in eighth place. At this rate, their numbers must be dropping like Chrysler stock.

  7. Actually the numbers are up slightly at NBC 6. Looking at the last week of NBC ratings, the 6pm is getting 2.8 and 3’s and is second place to WPLG and the 7pm is getting 3.8’s and 4’s in some cases. It was number one two days last week and number two behind Wheel of Fortune. I don’t know if it is the content or Joel being there, but something is different. There is a new energy on the 7.

  8. I see WTVJ is stilling running Tony & Julia 6pm promos, go figure……..Tony hasn’t anchored the 6 pm news in over a month. Hello Houston “we have a problem”

  9. I can’t wait to see the final goodbye segment Friday night. I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Kelly Craig and Bob Mayer on the set to say goodbye. Bob’s been there almost as long as Tony. I believe Bob started there in 1969, so he’s going into his 40th year. Another legend. Last one in South Florida, too, now that Dwight Lauderdale and Don Noe have retired. Kelly’s nearing 20 years. She started at WTVJ in 1990.
