Update: the new design is now live – check it out
With the nearing merger, yet to be approved by the FCC, WPLG is making changes.
Local10.com will soon be renamed to JustNews.com
In addition to the new name, the site has a new, cleaner, look with a large video player on the front page showing the latest stories.
Weather has been placed on its own website as well. Post-Newsweek’s stations will be using a subdomain on JustWeather.com. So for WPLG the address will be Miami.JustNews.com
The latest name change for WPLG’s site is one of several. It’s already gone trough several name changes over the years. From wplg.com to click10.com then local10.com
Of notice is the missing 10 in the logo.
If you’ve watched any of the newscasts recently they took the 10 out of the top weather graphics.
The 10 has been replaced by whatever you call that multi-color circle that is at the center of the zero.
Whether the whole station will receive a name change I don’t know. WDIV in Detroit already has the new look but they’ve kept the domain name ClickOnDetroit.com
You can see WPLG’s redesigned and renamed site live at JustNews.com
Spiffy. But there’s nothing (except the browser heading and the ’10’ stamp on old vids/pix) to indicate you’re on a TV station’s web site. Are they going for loss of identity on purpose?
Note that at the bottom of the page look at the Partners: CNN washingtonpost.com NBC MSNBC
They put as partners NBC and MSNBC with a link to there website
why not?
When all the hubbub is done with the buying of WTVJ, both stations could claim the justnews site as their own. Both sites, as they currently exist, shut down. Both stations retain their histories pages, as sub-pages of this main site rather than owning and maintaining 2 sites. Ad revenue goes up as the traffic from what was previously 2 sites now is 1.
Both stations retain their own branding for broadcasting purposes.
It’s possible.
cheezy! WPLG should be called justboring.com. SNOOZER!!!!!!
Justnews.com, IMO, doesn’t cut it. They should’ve named it Allthenews.com
I would go ahead and guess they are planning on probaly branding WTVJ’s logo with that fruity circle, just like WPLG has it in the middle of its zero, WTVJ will probaly have it in the middle of the six and NBC6.net will disapear and just use this new website since theres absolutely no sign of the website being channel 10. Especially since they are already using NBC and MSNBC as partners.
So, http://www.JustNews.com will be the WTVJ/WPLG website.
I find the references to “The Local News” intriguing… (i.e. As Seen on The Local News, Contact The Local News, etc.)
Sounds to me like they are going for a generic-branded newscast to air on both stations.
I fear lots of job losses in the news department, particularly at TVJ.
(sigh)
It should be “justinfomercials.com” or will both end up as flagship affiliates in the Guthy-Renker network? During the day, you’ll see 30 minute ads for Magic Bullet the blender–and after midnight, Magic Bullet the adult toy. Who needs Leno?
Kinda reminds me on NBC’s “Locals Only” type of deal.
It’s just easy I guess when they merge the 2 stations. This backs up the talk of a similcast in my opinion. No numbers to identify and just one website.
The best way to get a “feel” of the situation is by looking at other Post-Newsweek station sites (KPRC, WJXT, WKMG, WDIV). The NBC/MBNBC parternship tag could be a reference to WDIV. It seems they are the only other station that is on this new platform. Of course, you will still see their 4/Local 4 logo. Keep an eye on the other station sites. If they adopt the platform and keep their logo, then you can expect an “official” announcement before long that the WTVJ deal is signed, sealed and delivered. You can have your Just News at 5 and Just News at 5:30 on Channel 6, Just News at 6 on Channel 10, Just News at 7 on Ch 6, and your Just News TonightCast at 11 on both stations.
It all just makes cent$.
I liked local10.com
If WPLG gets WTVJ I’m sure the local news on WTVJ is done for. Just because Jacksonville does “First Coast News” doesn’t mean Miami can do it to. It’s all about ratings and advertising dollars. With the economy the way it is things will have to be cut.
I don’t like it. Justnews doesn’t sound local…it doesn’t extend their current brand…it’s too generic.
it doesn’t need to sound local. people read/watch the content
that separation of on-air/online brand and removing the big giant heads from the header of the page has been advocated for sometime. Cory from Lostremote and others come to mind.
Online the stations compete with not just the news shop across the street but this blog and the local papers and so on.
What’s the advantage of losing your TV branding and your identity on your web site? Regardless of who’s advocating it, it simply doesn’t make sense.
Without its TV identity, there’s nothing to differentiate the web site from the thousands of other news/blog/tabloid web sites out there now. If anything, the anonymity contributes to increased skepticism, doubt, and boredom.
When I go to a media web site, the first thing I expect to see is the same branding that I see/hear from their primary outlet, e.g., the station itself. Without that, there’s a “disconnect” (I wonder where the “real” web site went), and I leave the page to go to a site that I know is what I’m looking for.
Maybe I’m missing the whole point, so please tell me how in the world can increased anonymity be considered a good thing?
I suspect in very short order that the Local 10 brand will be going away in favor of “The Local News” for all on-air news branding on PLG (and as soon as the merger finalizes, on TVJ as well).
So for right now, yes, the site looks odd, but once they switch to “The Local News, online at JustNews.com” on TV, it’ll all tie together seamlessly.
Tie together seamlessly? Hell, there’s nothing at all to tie together!
Aside from the Miami temperature and the browser’s banner, there’s nothing at all to tie the web site to an entity, let alone a TV station. In fact, there’s nothing at all to indicate that it’s even related to television. Hell, justnews.com could be Billy Bob in Podunk’s home-baked web site given the complete lack of identity. Seems that the suits who thought this up have forgotten who make up their target audience.
IMO the lack of station-specific branding on a TV station web site is just plain dumb. If this is the greatest concept since sliced bread, why aren’t newspapers and radio stations following suit?
It is obvious by the new logo that Channel 10 is preparing to take over Channel 6. No numbers just a name, soon we will see other things that can be used for both stations. How sad something like this has to happen to a great community like ours.
