If you’re a Republican, you are now officially allowed to speculate about NBC6’s political coverage. As many of you know, WTVJ is only sending political reporter Nick Bogert to the Democratic convention. NBC6 will just use the network reporters at the Republican convention.
The NBC6 news director, who is a well known supporter of Barack Obama said “the real show is in Denver.” Is it right for NBC6 to not equally cover each parties?.. or is this just simple budgeting and NBC not wanting to spend the money to fly Bogert around? You decide.
Who cares about McCain and those angry Republicans anyways. Dnever is where the show is. 🙂
This is consistent with the pattern of ineptitude at NBC6. Hey Yvette, I’m guessing you flunked math…Nick can fly back from Denver via Minneapolis…maybe he can crash on Mary Richards’ couch while he’s in the Twin Cities. I keep thinking we need to hold a telethon for poor Channel 6.
I support Obama, too, but whatever happened to objective journalism. I’m just glad they had the cash for those meaningful reports Julia filed from Beijing.
bad call
They didn’t pay for those live shots from Beijing. That was covered by NBC Newschannel. As for the convention, NBC has to pay for those and they claim they can’t afford live shots from the Republican Convention. They should have kept Nick in Florida to do analysis because viewers are going to think NBC is biased.
Just when you think NBC 6’s ratings couldn’t go any lower, this happens. Geez. This was an uber-bad move by NBC 6. If they wanted to avoid this, they should’ve just kept Nick in Miami and he could’ve done analysis from there in the studio. I wonder what Post-Newsweek will do for the 2012 conventions if the sale goes through. I’m studying to become a journalist, and this is a HUGE ethics breach. News people are supposed to present themselves as politically neutral. The ND at WTVJ made a huge mistake when he said, “The real show is in Denver.” If I ever get a chance to work at WTVJ, I won’t make the same mistakes he did.
He is a she, Ryan. 🙂
Sorry. My mistake.
TV News budgets are shrinking. If they had to cover one, the dems is where it’s at. McCain and the GOP feels boring. Nick is a great reporter and will do a fantastic job covering both… one from the scene, the other from the studio. Miami TV used to travel everywhere… but now, it’s down to pulling it in off the satellites, because the travel money just isn’t there anymore. Plus, I expect to see Nick doing more coverage for the internet. No one watches the local news anymore. They simply dont have the time. The internet is where it’s at.
Good luck Nick!
Very surprising to hear someone who claims to be Brian Andrews saying that this is acceptable. If this is Brian, then you are wrong. A station needs to consider the impression they leave with viewers when they only send their political reporter to one convention Yes, the Democratic convention may seem more exciting.. young, black, energetic presidential candidate who wants to change the country, but I would think the republicans are fairly proud of their selection as well. Saying, “The Dems is where it’s at,” is not only grammatically but it is narrow minded and holds a liberal bias. That is a liberal bias that should not appear in television news. Saying that people don’t watch local news is also narrow minded. Ratings may be dow, but the main reason for that is bad programming and bad decisions made by local news managers. There are plenty of local news markets, like Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver and Atlanta where people still watch the news and want information from it. You can’t say “The Internet is where it’s at,” is once again grammatically incorrect and isolates millions of people who have no access to the web.
Hey Megan, don’t lecture anyone about grammar. Republican is a proper noun and requires capitalization. You managed to get it right with Democrat. Hmmm, wonder where you stand politically?
This is why people should stop all this talk about saving Ch6. This is why Ch6 news (and others if need be) should be allowed to die and go away. Their crime is being completely clueless and out of touch with viewers.
This is also why viewers do not trust you and have gone elsewhere for news and content.
So quit carping about the FCC and the public airwaves and all that crap. If Ch6 in an effort to advance their candidate won’t give equal time to the Republicans than I say good luck WPLG! Padlock the doors on Ch6 and have security escort their ND to the parking lot.
And remember this TV newspeople. Your decline happened under your watch and you did nothing about it. You said nothing. You didn’t fight. People like me and countless others warned you for years, but you arrogantly dismissed us.
Remember this when the next layoff list comes out. You were warned.
I was here when the networks bought into this market. I thought it was great. Now I see I was wrong. If a network O & O can’t “afford” to cover both conventions in person, there is something seriously wrong with the bookkeeping system. Don’t believe the hype–a local affiliate is a license to print money. Not as much as a cable system, but I will tell you right now that if these companies can’t show a profit and do the things we believe to be impartial in their news coverage, give me the frigging license and I’ll show you it CAN be done. Without selling almost half the day in infomercials, I might add. Stop believing the lies…Sumner Redstone is as much of a criminal as any oil-company executive.
Well, I am sorry for missing the capital “R” on republican. What, by the way needs a question mark. The point was about Brian Andrews defending WTVJ’s actions. Shows you what kind of reporter he was….and I say was becasue whatever he is doing in Colombia is crap.
It seems Megan has some jealousy issues from where I sit.
furthermore,
while the web is obviously a source for news, it has *not* translated in to big ad dollars (at least not yet) if you look at projections from say ten years ago, and the money actually being earned via web news, it’s nowhere close. local tv can is still relevant and still a money maker, at least when it’s well done.
Poor Megan. lol
oh mighty What, we’re sorry that we arrogantly dismissed you and others of your mentally superior kind. we’re sorry for not heeding your generous warnings, and letting tv die under our watch. you are correct oh mighty one, our foolishness has led everyone to turn off their tv sets and go to the internet for news they can trust. why would i watch breaking news in high definition on a 50 inch plasma when i could watch it on my phone? and everyone knows the internet is much more trustworthy than those stupid tv news depts. run by those unreliable corporations that have no one to answer to.
now if you’ll excuse me, i’ve got to read my most reliable and trusted news source, wikipedia and find out if comic genius Sinbad is alive or dead this week.
The web has been a huge money maker for Matt Drudge, CNN and many, many others. CNN’s and MSNBCs websites are some of the most visited web sites on the web. They make money. They are now huge assets to these operations. It has not been a big money maker for the locals because the train had already left the station by the time they figured out there was a train to catch.
Local news stations have lagged years behind because they were followers instead of leaders. How long did it take before stations actually began paying attnetion to making their stories available on the web? It has sonly been in the past few years.
TV invented video, but while local news sat around fat, dumb and happy, others stole the medium and are now killing TV stations with it.
Children with laptops and Handycams and the porn industry are the ones who broke new ground with video on the web. It was not any TV station. Some stations are still debating weather or not they should allow their videos to be embedded. Geesh. Dumb.
I can hear the TV execs sitting around in mind numbing meetings saying things like, “This blogging thing is getting hot, let’s get some blogs on our site.” Or, “That Youtube thing really seems to be popular and the young people like it. Maybe we should try it!”
Local TV is a money maker, but not the money maker it once was. And there isn’t enough TV ad dollars to support the losers anymore. Only the cream of the crop will survive. And there are not as many viewers. The pool has shrunk drastically.
If WTVJ made money like they used to it would never of been sold. No one would make a desperate sell on a property like WTVJ if it made dough.
Chuck said,
“Sumner Redstone is as much of a criminal as any oil-company executive.”
You have obviously bought into the class warfare thing people on television have told you to believe.
First of all, the government makes 3 to 5 more profit than the oil companies on a gallon of gas in the form of taxes. So when you hear some stupid reporter talk about oil profits remember that the government take is substantially more. The government is like the mob, they reach in and take the cut, yet they do nothing. They don’t drill, explore, refine or do any work. They just take the money. Yet, Exxon always delivers me exactly what I want, gas. Anytime, anywhere. I never bought a bad gallon of gas. While it is expensive, it is a quality, consistent product. They always give me what i pay for. The same can’t be said of the government.
Class warfare specialists like you never seem to tell anyone that. Neither will the media for that matter. You just parrot what you are told on the tube.
I am no fan of Sumner Redstone or his properties. He makes a lot of money shoveling junk culture through the tube. But it is his candy store and he is free to do with his properties. I don’t watch CBS or MTV. I suggest you do the same.
We’re debating whether or not some suits should fly to Denver and add local hot air to the national hot air from too many network reporters combined with the flatulence from the talk radio hosts. Lord, who needs it all? Has anyone noticed that nobody bothered to cover election night online except 4? 7 sent people to county websites, 6 and 10 were pitifully late with numbers, and nobody bothered to actually report on the results as they came in, except 4, the station who didn’t ‘invest’ in sending a ‘face’ to the convention. However, they did do the right job at home.
It was a primary with many races that had no opponents and it was for Democrats only. Plus, no one showed at the polls as expected.
4 did it because its current ND is taking a different tact. She has hired as many boring people as she can in order to drive away ever last viewer they have. It started with changing over to the cheapest homemade graphics they could come up with and than moved on from there. You really have to try and stand out in today’s media environment.
And..They have just formed an important news partnership with Miami-Dade Schools to begin providing news cut ins during 8th grade homeroom.
What, about the only truth in your statement is that the news director is a woman, and I suspect you guessed at that. Hey, 50-50 odds. And gee, the Childrens trust, mayor’s race, school board, county commissioners, all non-partisan races. Lots of the house races were primaries for all because there is no opposition in November. Today’s winners were elected to office. Of course, you wouldn’t know all of that. You’re too busy second guessing people to bother with facts.
Im not defending TVJ’s decision… but I can see how the ND there made the choice. You have to learn how management thinks. Where are they going to get the most bang for their buck? If they only have so many dollars to spend, then how best to spend them wisely? Which convention will produce more “talk about” news. I think that if you’re going to build up a guy’s image as the political reporter, then you should have him at BOTH conventions.
And as for what Im doing in Colombia… I am having the time of my life, teaching english to thousands of people, changing the way the rest of the world thinks about this country, and buidling my own news department from the ground off. Megan can kiss my ass.
Sounds like Brian is on the defense. Seriously, congrats on what you are doing but I don’t think you’re changing the world. Do your best and fight to change what you can. Just don’t duck behind newspaper machines when the next hurricane hits.
The only station to cover both conventions. The only local affiliate live on the convention floor. Remember that the next time you ponder writing “flash and trash” in one of your posts.
4 doesn’t need anyone from their operations in Denver or the Twin Cities… Remember KCNC and WCCO?
TV news is still the majority leader when it comes to information- 80% vs 20% who get their news from the internet.
I see this blog post and I laughed. I’m glad that NBC6 is in last place, especially if they pull s**t like this.
seriously…wsvn is looking really good with their convention coverage…dave kartunen is owning that convention floor on tv…i hear they have a crew of 5 people (2 photogs, 1 producer, 1 engineer, and dave) and will do the same thing for the gop convention…go ‘svn!!! apparently there’s no issue with money there!
Channel 7 looks like crap from 10 to 11 because it’s the same old distorted SD. At least the networks (including PBS) are all in HD.
Brian,
You are “changing the way the rest of the world thinks about this country”. You? Who asked you to that? The arrogance.
How will you change the whole world’s attitude from a hell hole like Columbia? Don’t believe it’s a hell hole? Maybe you should of talked to the tens of thousands of people who fled to America for a better life here.
It is Columbia that should be worrying about how the world thinks of them. They don’t have a rep for valuing human life.
We are pioneering miracles in science, technology and health and just about every sector of life. We always have. That’s what we do. We are probing Mars looking for life on the cellular level. We also give opportunity to people who’s only discernible skill is a live shot.
What do they do in Columbia? They can’t even manufacture a washing machine.
You sound like the typical self loathing American elitist. How big of you to go down there and live right next to them so you can make yourself feel superior.
Teaching thousand of people? Thousands? Thousands? Come on Brian. Grow up and quit lying.
what 8/28/2008 at 11:17 pm…
wow.
So Brian Andrews, if this is REALLY you……
Tell me, where did you live in Miami Shores?, What 7 News colleague did you live near? What was the name of your ex BF, and what was his profession?
If you are going to impersonate somebody, you picked the wrong person. Brian is a very objective and fair minded journalist and would never say such things on a blog like this.
So, we are waiting……answer the questions, or can you????
Now now, Sean. You don’t know that he isn’t Brian Andrews. I’ve taken steps to see if it is really him, and i assure you we will find out soon enough. It’s not fair to ask someone to reveal personal information on a public blog. We will find out soon enough if it is him or not, and if it isn’t, i will make sure to have him banned. No worries. 🙂
Thank You.. Alex!
I know for a fact it is not Brian. That is why I asked those questions. I know he can’t answer them.
No problem, Sean. Check your e-mail (the one you provided). I sent you a short message. 🙂
Thanks Alex..check your email..
