The Palm Beach Post breaks the news that for the past year WPTV NBC5 anchor Laurel Sauer has been battling cancer and had two surgeries.
Page 6 also reveals that Sauer sought support from another cancer survivor WPBF anchor Kristen Hoke who herself went trough two breast cancer scares and who was among the very few people besides Laurel Sauer’s family that knew of her condition.
In an email to Page 6 Sauer revealed she was diagnosed with “a female reporductive cancer” and that she is now cancer-free but goes in for checkups every 3 months.

Wow. I’m in shock. I wonder how she was able to keep this secret from her co-workers. At least, she’s okay. She’s cancer-free, but like the article says, she gets treated every three months. You go, Laurel! God Bless You!
Check-ups are different from being “treated”. But cancer is horrid, it’s messed around with my life way too much. I’m glad she’s doing okay…best anchor in West Palm.
Tim..calling her the best anchor in west palm is a little crazy…she really isn’t and she is WAY too old to still be on tv…my grandma who is 69 years old looks better than she does…she just needs to retire and concentrate on her health…get a younger attractive girl to fill her spot..west palm beach has the oldest looking anchors in south florida
Why are you “Annoyed”? Are you one of the other West Palm anchors and I offended you? lol Who cares how Laurel looks? I don’t!!! I grew up watching her and I wouldn’t want to see her gone. Perhaps I should have just referred to her as my “favorite anchor in West Palm”. Sorry! Why should people retire just cos they reach a certain age? That’s dumb. I’m 20 and I’m not “annoyed” by seeing older women on my TV. I take them a whole lot more seriously than people just a couple of years older than me. (Plus, one of them – Chandra Bill – is HOT!!!) Also this is a sexist thing as well…why does nobody say Jim Sackett should retire? He’s OLD and has been old for about 30 years! LOL
I know a few girls who really want to be broadcast journalists and it baffles me as to why they’d want to put themselves through that pressure…always having to be perfect (one girl I know is having surgery to fix an imperfection just so she has a better chance of getting hired!) and then quitting when you reach 45 cos you’re “old”. Madness! I know TV is a visual medium but that’s just frickin’ ridiculous.
Anyway, everyone in the West Palm area is ancient and like a zillion years older than Laurel…they’re not going to appreciate a younger, more attractive girl. Who can identify with that? Young, attractive people aren’t sitting in like losers watching TV news. And old men pervs can have more fun watching the Playboy channel than watching some bimbo in a fugly suit reading the news.
And evidently Laurel has been able to work AND concentrate on her health. So… there! lol
