NBC’s Saturday Afternoon Broadcast Up 15% Over Sydney
Saturday’s Total Day Olympic Coverage Draws 78 Million Viewers
ATHENS, Greece — August 15, 2004 — Through two days, the Networks of NBC’s coverage of the 2004 Olympic Games from Athens has attracted 95 million total viewers — eight million more than Sydney through Day 2 — making it the most viewed non-U.S. Olympics ever after the first two days, according to Nielsen Media Research. Additionally, Saturday’s coverage on the Networks of NBC grabbed 78 million total viewers, 12 million ahead of the comparable Saturday from Sydney in 2000.
NBC’s first night of competition on Saturday night (8:30?11:45 p.m.) earned an 11.7 rating/23 share, compared to Sydney’s 13.1/25 in 2000. (Prior to Sydney, the previous non-U.S. Summer Games were held in Barcelona in 1992 and there is no direct comparison due to the fact the first Saturday was Opening Ceremony).
NBC’s primetime coverage, which included Michael Phelps collecting his first gold medal in the 400m Individual Medley and the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics competition, peaked with a 12.8/23 at 10 p.m.
The network’s Saturday afternoon coverage from noon ? 6 p.m., featuring Phelps’ qualification rounds in the 400m Individual Medley and Women’s Diving, propelled the broadcast to an impressive 7.1/19. This represents a 15 percent increase over Sydney’s first Saturday afternoon broadcast, which earned a 6.2/16 from 4:30?6 p.m.
Other ratings notes:
# NBC’s Saturday primetime portion (8:30-11 p.m.) earned a 12.0/22, generating triple digit increases over the closest competition. NBC outdistanced ABC by 287 percent (12.0 vs. 3.1); Fox by 200 percent (4.0) and CBS by 173 percent (4.4).
# Saturday’s performance marked an increase over NBC’s season-to-date Saturday primetime average in households by 208% (12.0 rtg vs. 3.9 rtg) and 240% for adults 18-49 (6.8 rtg vs. 2.0 rtg).
# NBC’s 2004 Athens Olympic two-day coverage stands at a 13.2 rating/25 share, compared to Sydney’s 14.5/27; and Barcelona’s 13.8/29 (for their first day of coverage on Saturday).
# San Diego led the 54 metered markets (excluding Ft. Myers and Orlando) with a 21.1/38; followed by Salt Lake City’s 20.0/40; San Francisco and Portland tied with an 18.6/34 and 18.6/36, respectively; and Indianapolis posted an 18.2/30.
NBC’s unprecedented 24-hour, round-the-clock coverage of the 2004 Olympic Games from Athens will total 1,210 hours on seven NBC platforms – NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, Telemundo and NBC HDTV affiliates – offering more Olympic coverage than the combined total from the last five previous Summer Olympics.
