WPEC 3pm Newscast Set to Debut Today

It’s by no means a new thing among TV news stations but it is locally. WPEC CBS12 today is launching the area’s first 3pm weekday newscast. They call it CBS 12 News at 3 and it’s aimed at women, especially the stay-at-home mom crowd. Liz Quirantes will anchor the new show with Suzanne Boyd and Stephanie Wilson filing pre-taped stories daily.

3pm newscasts don’t seem to be very common among TV stations. A quick Google search showed KMGH in Denver and KSNV in Las Vegas airing news at 3pm. It’s no secret WPEC has fallen behind in the ratings after a resurgent WPBF took over second place, so CBS 12 is looking for other time slots where it can be competitive.

Here’s a promo they’ve been airing for the past couple weeks featuring anchors Suzanne Boyd, Liz Quirantes and Stephanie Watson.

  1. Wptv debuts its 4pm hour long show next Monday Aug 18 with Shannon Cake on main duties. It will be the lead in for the 5pm newscast which may take a ratings hit after losing Ellen.

  2. Umm… KMGH 7 no longer airs news at 3:00 p.m. and neither does KSNV 3. KTNV 13 in Las Vegas airs news at 3:00 p.m. as well as WTMJ 4 in Milwaukee and KCAL 9 in Los Angeles.

  3. I’d assume a local non-news type show in the 3PM hour. Example that comes to mind is those shows seen on some of the Gannett stations, like ‘Atlanta & Company’ on WXIA, ‘Colorado & Company’ on KUSA, ‘Arizona Midday’ on KPNX, etc. Another example would be ‘Windy City Live’ on ABC O&O WLS in Chicago… and another example would be ‘The Morning Blend’ on Journal’s WTMJ in Milwaukee.

Of shows respective to certain TV station groups. ‘The Better Show’ is exclusive to Meredith stations, with a few non-Meredith stations that carry the show. ‘The Daytime Show’ is exclusive to Media General stations. I could see Better and Daytime being candidates for national syndication. ‘Right This Minute’ newsmagazine show is produced in partnership with Scripps, Raycom, and Cox, and syndicated nationally by MGM. Scripps proposed newsmagazine show ‘The Now’ (intended to be national 4PM newscast) doesn’t seem to click for me either… even though I may not live in a market with a Scripps-owned station. ‘The List’ and ‘Let’s Ask America’ are currently exclusive to Scripps stations… and I’ve heard talk of MGM looking to syndicate LAA nationally, but not sure if MGM is mulling over syndicating The List. This would certainly give other syndicated shows by major TV distributors (like ABC-Disney, CBS’ CTD, Fox’s 20th Television, NBC-Universal, Sony, and Warner Bros./Telepictures) a run for their money.
