Former WSVN Meteorologist Found Dead in Maine

Tom Johnston, former WSVN meteorologist, was found dead last night in Maine after being reported missing on Monday when he failed to return from a Portland, Maine event. Police reportedly found his body last night. He was 46.

Johnston worked for a couple years at WSVN from 2003 until 2005. Most recently he had been the chief meteorologist at WCSH the NBC station in Portland, Maine since 2014.

Last night Portland, Maine Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen told the press “Any suspicion of foul play has been ruled out and the investigation is focused on an apparent suicide.”

I’m still processing this because we bantered a bit on Twitter just a few days ago and Tom was the usual funny, sarcastic TJThunder we all knew and liked. It just goes to show that we never know what someone might be going through.

Condolences to his family, and those of you who knew him.

  1. Tragic 🙁

I seem to remember that he was the weekend evening meteorologist (I think he had replaced Brent Cameron), and he was famously involved in a fistfight with Jonathan Novack, who was the weekend morning weather guy. Novack was immediately fired by WSVN (I think he was replaced by Vivian Gonzalez, who of course is now the weekday morning meteorologist, currently out on maternity leave). Subsequently, Tom left and was replaced by…Brent Cameron!

    RIP to Tom
