So WPLG is finally getting that new set SFLTV first told you about in December. After today’s newscasts are over the current set will be hauled away into the dumpster to make way for what’s coming.
As we reported back in December rumor has it the new set will be an open newsroom, serving as the backdrop for the news anchors, that would look similar to the current WPBF set or some sort of a mash-up between the WPBF set and what WSVN’s newsplex used to look like circa 2001-2005. We don’t have to wait long to see whether that’s all true but we’d like to see Channel 10 finally make use of that giant space they’ve been inhabiting.
The new set should make its debut sometime in July
BREAKING NEWS: Berkshire Hathaway officially owns WPLG!
Instead of throwing away the Sabca-designed set (debuted in March 2009, after leaving longtime Biscayne Boulevard location), I would suggest WPLG Local-10 donate it to a Miami/Fort Lauderdale area high school or college journalism/media production program… if it’s still in mint condition. Hopefully WPLG management takes a page from WXIA 11-Alive in Atlanta and WKRG News-5 in Mobile-Pensacola, which recently donated their previous news sets to high school and/or college journalism/media production programs in their respective metropolitan areas.
As for the company designing the new WPLG Local-10 set… not sure if it’ll be by FX Design Group… or if Miami-Fort Lauderdale viewers could and might be seeing WrightSet or Studio A Broadcast Designs. WrigtSet designed beautiful set for former sister station KPRC Houston last year… and Studio A Broadcast Designs has did new set designs for WXIA Atlanta, KOIN Portland (Oregon), and WIAT Birmingham. Broadcast Design International and Devlin Design Group are also known for designing beautiful local TV news sets.
That explains why weather and traffic had a different look this morning (I didn’t watch the weekend shows). Guess they were on the old set while the construction continues.
