A mere five moths after WPEC management moved Juan Carlos Fanjul from the station’s weekday morning newscast to weekends he has apparently decided to walk out. GossipExtra reports Fanjul, in a statement to the website, says WPEC made him an offer to stay and extend his contract but he chose to move on and look for “a challenging new assignment in television news.”

Juan Carlos Fanjul joined WPEC in 2008 from WGN, hired as the heir-apparent to long-time anchor Curt Fonger, but that never happened. Fanjul started off by anchoring the 7pm newscast on weekdays with Emily Pantelides. A few months later management split them up by moving Pantelides to weekday mornings with Ric Blackwell in 2009 only to bring them together again a few months later by moving Fanjul to mornings and laying off Blackwell. Not content with ratings WPEC management moved Suzanne Boyd and Eric Roby back to weekday mornings, Pantelides to weekend mornings and Juan Carlos Fanjul to the evening newscasts. Pantelides would quit a month later.
