WTVJ Axes 7pm Newscast; News at 5pm Returns

29

WTVJ is axing the 7pm newscast ‘South Florida Nightly News’ in favor of an hour-long newscast from 5pm to 6pm.

The move comes as ‘Miami NonStop’, the new 24-hour news and infotainment channel is about to debut on digital sub-channel 6.2. The new channel will feature nightly and weekly newscasts in addition to recycled material from the main WTVJ channel, plus  an original program called ‘Miami Mom’ for advise on motherhood.

  1. I also heard that Daily Connection will be move on 6.2 at 7PM and Amara Sohn Anchoring Nonstop news at 9PM.

  2. More shows and no ratings. The 7pm news didn’t do well since it started. No one is watching WTVJ. Since Segreto, Connable, Craig, Yarbourough and Deanno left, the rating have been in the toilet. Their morning show is barely getting a 1.0 and their 7pm news was getting hash marks. It’s about time that they fire everyone who manages that place there and just put on infomercials.

  3. Will they have that idiot Tammy Delgado producing the 5pm news? She produced that pathetic 5pm news years ago that they had to cancel because it was so bad. She is also behind the ratings deprived morning news on NBC6.

    • Tammy is too busy paying out money after losing her defamation lawsuit and having an affair with the news director at WTVJ. They won’t let her touch an NBC show.

  4. Daily Connection will not be moved to 6.2. The show is canned.

Nonstop channel will also have a lot of new, fresh material and programming. Not just recycled WTVJ content. Nonstop channel will also be on comcast cable.

  5. Ellen will be on at 4pm. I saw it on a promo. News 5pm-6pm, 6pm news, then Extra/Access Hollywood. I think this is a great move on WTVJ’s hands.

  6. THEY SHOULD BRING BACK KELLY OR JULIA TO ANCHOR. IM TIRED OF JACKIE AND KEVIN. WHAT THE HELL DO THEY SEE IN JACKIE NESPRAL?

  7. I’ve been saying it for years…get rid of nespral, she’s terrible. for some reason they don’t see that, she kills the ratings!

  8. I say bring back Joel Connable and Kelly Craig to anchor the 5pm, 6pm and 11pm show. This would definitely bring back the ratings…but honestly if I was Joel and Kelly, I would say “YOU WANT ME NOW?…You better pay me plenty of money”,,,and that’s not going to happen. Hopefully no more Kevin and Jackie. They need new blood there if they want to succeed.

  9. I miss the old NBC 6 true journalist like Tony, Bob, Jennifer, Kelly, Julia, Joel, and Michael. Now they have Roxanne, Nathalie, and Brent. When will they ever get a new set? If they bring back Bob and Pam that would be great because I hate to see Pam anchoring by herself. Why too many ladies on the morning shift? South Florida Today sucks it was better with Bob, Kelly, Lonnie and Trina. Shiri has talent but Roxanne and Nathalie? Jackie Nespral should step aside for someone that can bring in ratings. She has been the lead anchor since 2001 and management is dumb to see that she is not bringing the ratings in. I like Jackie Nespral but if I was in management I would have her do something else. I would not get rid of her. Kevin has talent but if they can bring back Kelly or Julia the ratings will improve if that happens.

  10. NBC seems insistant upon keeping Jackie Nespral as WTVJ’s “eye candy”.

NBC (now under the Comcast umbrella) needs to clean house at WTVJ… ridding WTVJ of current management of Ardyth Diercks, Tammy Delgato, and Lane Michaelsen… as well as ridding WTVJ of Nespral.

NBC made the worst mistake of letting a lot of good talents slip away… firing Joel Connable and Kelly Craig… Paul Deanno moving away to Seattle… Julia Yarbough leaving the TV news business, if I’m not mistaken… Tony Segreto and Bob Mayer retiring after 40+ years at WTVJ. I could picture NBC rehiring Kelly as lead female co-anchor.

NBC ruined KNTV with its current “NBC Bay Area” branding… I don’t know if NBC is still missing its original San Francisco NBC station KRON-TV 4. As for WTVJ’s branding… I don’t find the “NBC Miami” branding all that appealing either. I could picture WTVJ with a WXIA-TV & WPTA-TV inspired branding… “6 Alive”. Or a generic branding… “WTVJ 6” and “WTVJ News”… without the “NBC” in the branding. It’s a thought.

  11. They should bring back Kelly Craig back! She lost weight and looking good! I saw her on NBC 6 interactive specials and she did great. She has a lot of passion in what she does.

  12. Well, if the 7pm newscast is gone from 6, who will pick it up? 4 or 7? Notice I rule out 10, b/c they carry Wheel of FOrtune.

  13. It would be nice if one of the stations should have a 7PM newscast. Like to get my news at that time besides watching the entertainment shows. But NBC 6 sucked at that, it was a good idea but it sucked.

  14. WNBC moved their 7PM news to their “New York Nonstop” subchannel in early 2009. I take it that WTVJ may not be moving the 7PM news to its new “Miami Nonstop” subchannel.

Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, and Nate Berkus were not allowed to be aired in the 4PM hour, in direct competition with Oprah’s show, due to contract stipulations. Oprah’s final episode is set to air on May 25, with the re-runs airing until September 9. WSVN airs news 5-9AM, Noon-1PM, 4-7PM, Deco Drive show at 7:30PM, and 10-11:30PM. I’m not sure if WFOR or WBFS will get 7PM or 7:30PM news anytime soon… and I’m not sure what WFOR will be airing at 4PM this fall. I’m not sure that WPLG will get 7PM news either.

  15. CBS 4 is getting Anderson Cooper’s new show at 4:00 replacing Oprah in September. Has anyone seen the new nonstop channel? The shows I like is Nonstop news at 9, talk scoop and the rundown. All the other shows are okay. If a 7PM newscast happens I think WBFS 33 can do that. But my only problem with the nonstop news at 9 why not move it to 7:00. Who watches news at 9PM? I think that was a dumb move.

  16. With all of NBC’s O&O stations now airing “NBC Nonstop” subchannels… it remains to be seen if non O&O’s will be getting “Nonstop”.

I could picture Gannett’s WXIA being the very first non-O&O to get the new subchannel network, and other Gannett-owned NBC stations following. I could also picture Scripps, Hearst, and Media General NBC stations getting “Nonstop” eventually. Just a thought.

    • Eric,

Why are you so hot on WXIA? It’s a low-rated station that does less news than anyone else in that market. Both its news and weather images are weak, based on where people go during big news events. Gannett should frankly be embarrassed at the state of what I’m pretty sure is its biggest-market station.

None of those things mean Gannett won’t force WXIA to create a 24-7 news subchannel, but they would be wasting their time. Seems like the smart place for Gannett to try the idea would be at KUSA — a strong station with a strong news image.

While I’m on the subject of WXIA, I’ll chime in on the branding you mentioned earlier. Frankly, I think the “Alive” branding is some of the most outdated, silly, meaningless branding at any TV station anywhere. I understand why WXIA keeps it after all these years, but there’s no good reason for anyone to adopt it today.

As for Scripps, I could see WPTV doing with a 24-7 news channel. Heck, WBBH in Ft. Myers has one. I think they call it “NBC2 News Now.”

  17. The “11 Alive” branding is to WXIA and its viewers… just like the “Move Closer To Your World” theme music is to WPVI and its viewers. WXIA viewers had a fit when Gannett retired the “11 Alive” branding in early 1994, and was forced to bring it back in early 1996. WPVI viewers had a fit when the ABC station pulled “MCTYW”, and was forced to bring it back some 4 days later.

I’m aware that Gannett ruined several of its stations… most notably WUSA-TV 9 in D.C. The CBS station was a lot better with its popular “Eyewitness News” branding, and its long-running anchor team of Gordon Peterson and Maureen Bunyan. WXIA and WKYC made the worst mistake of dumping their 5PM newscasts for Dr. Phil’s talk show.

WTVJ adopting the “Eyewitness News” branding may seem a bit far-fetched, given that WPLG (and WPBF) once called their newscasts “Eyewitness News”… and I’m guessing that a “6 Alive” branding would likely be far-fetched. Another branding idea for WTVJ… “Action News”.

    • There is a HUGE difference between WXIA and WPVI. WPVI is a powerhouse, legacy station. WXIA can’t touch it.

Again, I get why WXIA sticks with the stupid “Alive” branding, but there’s no good reason for anyone to adopt it today. And frankly, I bet almost no one would flinch at this point, if WXIA dropped it tomorrow.

The days of the fun, cheesy brands are over. The only stations that use them are stations that have used them forever. WTVJ will never pay to license some outdated brand name like “Eyewitness News” or “Action News,” and it shouldn’t. As long as NBC owns the station, “NBC” will be in the brand name. Maybe — MAYBE — if someone else buys the place, the newscasts will get a new, non-NBC brand name, but it will be something like “South Florida’s 6 News,” not “Eyewitness Action NewsCenter 6.”

BTW, WPEC used “Eyewitness News long before WPBF did. And as you probably know, WCIX used “Action News” for a while.

  18. NBC6 Miami news has become the absolute worst station to watch. It was always my favorite morning news show, but the downfall started when Lonnie left. It has gone down hill ever since. Can’t stand the evening news anchors either. Channels 4 and 10 are so much more professional in their reporting and presentation. Channel 6 needs a complete overhaul and fast!

  19. Has everyone forgot why WTVJ is branding themselves as NBC Miami b/c their roots are here in MIAMI and they are South Florida’s 1st television Station so they have a right to do it what ever they seen fit.

  20. I’ve watched “Miami Nonstop” on Comcast Channel 216 and it seems to be nothing more than a continuous commercial for WTVJ – and perhaps a few tourists who like to see the local propoganda that shows Miami to be nothing more than a quiet beach and a few and palm trees…

I’ve been watching WTVJ since 1970 and it seems that management wants to continue to promote WTVJ for it’s long history in Miami – but the irony is that while the staff says “I am Miami” in several of their many ads, the fact is that WTVJ has not been in Miami for years and that includes most of the on-air staff (most live in Broward), so time to put away the 1970’s version of WTVJ and instead promote the station for what is can do if it’s done right…
