WTVJ and NBC are now owned by Comcast after the Federal Communications Commission just voted 4 to 1 to approve the merger! Approval conditions will be announced soon by the Justice Department. The Washington Post says Comcast promiced to add 1,000 hours of news and informational programming to some of the channels it now owns, offer a $9.95/month broadband internet service for low-income households and contribute $20 million in venture funds for the production of minority programs.
FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, a Democrat, voted against the merger on grounds that Comcast would have too much power controlling news and entertainment programs.
This is the worst thing that could have happen to NBC
Wouldn’t “the worst” be shutting everything down?
At least some will still have work.
Somewhere.
It will be interesting to see if Comcast Spotlight will take over the sale of airtime for TVJ. If Comcast Spotlight was a TV station in this market, it would be one of the top revenue generators like Ch 23 and 7. This is great for business owners because there are more choices for blended media buying, i.e., Spotlight could sell ad space on many more media platforms – but not so great for the competition. I think there are close to 80 *insertable cable networks *(insert advertising on, unlike HBO or Showtime, etc…)
interesting, my understanding is that just based on estimates WSVN rakes it in big time with WPLG 2nd behind about $20 or so million a year.
I’m sure in time we’ll see them integrate Comcast Spotlight no reason not to
Other than NBC and WTVJ being owned by Comcast… I take it that Telemundo and WSCV are also owned by Comcast as well. The reception over this media merger remains mixed.
Before the merge took place… many were hoping for Belo or Cox to acquire ownership of the iconic station… Post-Newsweek was hoping to acquire ownership, but backed out 2 days before Christmas. NBC letting Kelly Craig slip away like they did. It seems quite obvious that NBC was insistant upon keeping Jackie Nespral as WTVJ’s “eye candy”… and whether or not Comcast sees it the same way is anybody’s guess.
Here’s a question? Can NBC6 cover the news effectively. I saw no. They barely have any newscasts and they never break in for breaking news becasue they don’t have the capability to do so anymore. Did anyone notice, they are now doing a 15 minute Sunday nigth newscast and then Sports Final comes on? They do no news at 11am. When the two cops were shot in Miami last week, NBC was interviewing a psychic while every other station was on. When they did finalyl break in at 11:55, it was just Trina, their weather person talkin gon camera with the wrong information and no video. They have turned off viewers with their all female morning news with no substance. Their 6pm and 7pm are rarel yontop of any good stories and they are getting hash marks in the Nielsen ratings. That means no one is watching. They rarely do live shots. They have no helicopter and very few reporters with any experience. I am curious to see what others say.
I agree with what your saying channel 6 sucks. Jackie Nespral needs to retire and they should bring back Kelly Craig or Julia Yarbough to anchor with Kevin Corke. I was dissappointed with Channel 6 coverage of the police shootings. At least Channel 4 was smart to share video with Channel 10 helicopter. They have too many woman on their morning shift. I have notice they there are leaning to more entertainment leisure than hard news. I watch Channel 10 or 4 to get my news. Can anyone tell me why Today In South Florida with Pam is still #1? I like Pam and NBC should have kept Bob with Pam they had good chemistry. They should bring back Kelly Craig and hire more male talants.
With the recent NBC-Comcast merge now completed. I’m wondering if Comcast will clean house at WTVJ. Many WTVJ viewers would like to see new management, as well as competant talents. Other than NBC making the mistake of getting rid of Kelly Craig… NBC also made the worst mistake of getting rid of Joel Connable as well.
Eric, they should bring back Kelly Craig. When I saw her do the cancer special a few months ago, she was superb as always. The new News Director and General Manager does not know how to run a HISTORIC station. I hope comcast will be aggressive with their stations! First they need a brand new set and relaunch CHOPPER 6 and then clean house. It makes me sick watching channel 6 because I always watched it and since Bob Mayer retired I turned to another station and they do less news. I think with the Police Shootings and Memorials CHANNEL 10 gets the award for best coverage. I was impressed on Monday watching their coverage.
