62 Years Ago Today WTVJ Went On-Air

5

On March 21, 1949 at noon WTVJ went on the air for the first time, primarily as a CBS affiliate, becoming Florida’s first television station and the nation’s 16th. It remained the only commercial TV station until 1954 when WFTL went live as an NBC affiliate on Dember 24, 1954. WFTL however failed to make any inroads against WTVJ because few TV sets at the time were capable of receiving UHF signals.

WTVJ was originally known as Channel 4 until the big switch in the mid 90s when they traded numbers with WFOR, then known as WCIX.

    • It’s sad when you consider how they were once the leaders in local TV. Now all they have is mostly hysterical women and amateurs who bable about nothing.

  1. Hey, you need to get your facts straight…WFTL signed on earlier than 1954. By the time WITV Channel 17 (ABC) signed on, WFTL had already been on the air for a little while, though the exact date I haven’t found yet.
