WTVJ to Launch 24/7 News Channel

22

B&C reporting WTVJ will be one of several NBC-owned station to get the group’s so-called Nonstop multicast channel airing original and re-purposed local content.

The idea was first tested in New York at WNBC which launched ‘New York Nonstop’ in 2009 as a pilot. The 24/7 channel has about 8 hours of local programming plus content from NBC production house LX and much like ‘The Daily Connection’ program ‘Nonstop’ will have content coming from NBC Local’s ‘content center’ in New York.

Wikipedia describes ‘New York Nonstop’ as 24-hour entertainment-oriented news service and lists ‘Meet The Press’ and the ‘Wallstreet Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo’, and the station’s 7PM newscast as some of the programs airing.

B&C says WTVJ will launch the channel “at the dawn of the new year” and our guess is that it will probably air on 6.2 terrestrial. And for the HD nerds among you the channel will be broadcast in 16:9, 480i letterboxed format

  1. We needed to reach the 3 shut ins in Miami who watch TVJ sub channels on an antenna.

Since we barely cover the news for our half hour newscasts we figured let’s go all out and not cover the news 24/7.

This idea has been disaster in NY so Miami here we come!

  2. can i just say i never get these .channels… its not like all of can get them.. I have at&t u-verse and i dont get these stupid sub channels… so ya lol

  3. Do you think for this local 24/7 newschannel will NBC re-hire some familiar faces? Bob Mayer, Tony Segreto, Kelly Craig, Patricia Andreu? Because the rate they’re going now I would not watch it. Diego is right Jackie Nespral 24/7. I have not watch NBC 6 mornings since Bob Mayer left and I hope they realize they lost alot more viewers with the all woman format. Whoever is making these choices is not smart and the dress code everyday is short skirts and legs sometimes I see scratches on legs…Not Professional. Bring back those four as listed and then I will watch it. I would rather see Local 10 with a local 24/7 channel than NBC Miami.

    • NBC is as brain dead in prime as they are with their local news stations. Ch 10 and Ch 7 haven’t forgotten that TV is not the internet. People watch TV news and are attracted to personalities. That hasn’t changed. You can’t hire a bunch of unknown interns for minimum wage and expect people to watch.

The only thing they had going for them was their morning show, which wasn’t even doing that well, and they killed it by stacking it full of a bunch of clueless young women (aside from Pam) who drone on and on about nothing. Why all women???

With this new plan they will be at about the same level as community access channels. Not a lot of advertising dollars there. This can only be seen as good news for their competitors.

  4. So with the newsrooms become content centers then? I hate the idea of the California stations being one network though. NBC sure stands for Nothing But Crap now.

  5. By the way, has anyone seen Connable on Channel 10 in Miami. I saw him on WABC up here in New York. I also saw he was just nominated for an Emmy. I miss him as well.

  6. NBC6 totally sucks. Those women in the morning do just drone on and on about nothing. But you can’t knock Roxanne or that traffic girl. They never worked in a major market and they took those jobs for nothing. Imagine making 30 or 40 thousand in Miami when regular reporters are getting 90 or more and the anchors are making in the twos and threes. I also can’t watch that guy Kevin. he seems nice but sounds like Kermit. He’s always thanking the reporters for their stories. Hey, news flash – that is patronizing and that’s their damn job.

  7. Has anyone seen that Cruiseguy on NBC^. He is so bad as well. Apparentely NBC is working with him by using him as the talent but not paying him. He just sells his cruises which you can get cheaper on other sites. He is sweating on Tv and he is so nervous.

  8. I get the sub channels on Comcast 200 series channels, all of them I think. BTW WTVJ is looking for a part time free lance ( which means no benefits )reporter. Why don’t they just use Adam Cooperstein more instead?

  9. I’ll be interested to see if WPLG renews Micheal Putney’s contract as he is the highest paid reporter in South Florida getting well over $300,000 a year, but also the best too.

  10. Sorry I’m a little late to the party on this post. If anyone is still reading it here’s what I’ve got to add.

I go to school in New York and get New York Nonstop. It’s complete crap. Anything that they’ve made that they know nobody will watch gets thrown on that channel. It’s NOT a 24 hour news channel like NY1 or any of the TimeWarner operated local news networks, it’s just a regular sub channel with crappy programming.

I just took a look at the guide, here are the next three shows: Talk Stoop, Scene in NY, and Only in New York. Sounds kind of cool, but really the poor production values and lack of interesting content really makes the channel bad. If they produce anything good they’ll put it on WNBC.

One interesting note is that every day there’s NBC Nightly News at 6:30, New York Nightly News at 7 for thirty minutes, but then they do an extra 30 mins of New York Nightly on NY Nonstop. Miami will probably get the same thing.
