  1. I can think of another title NBC 6 can open: Voice Over. Hire Bill Ratner for this position. If NBC 6 can’t hire him, Local 10 should.

  2. Julian – Not sure if this is what you sensed since I didn’t watch Joel tonight, but I have noticed that he’s been getting in quite a few digs with his co-workers in the interest of making banter – like when Julia laughed about a story the other night, he said “I guess you’ll be laughing about that story again at 11 tonight.” I don’t think he’s trying to sound mean, but it does come off a bit uncomfortable, especially considering Julia, Paul, Jackie and even Joe Rose don’t seem to joke back.

    Anyone else notice this?

  3. Actually Jay, you need to get your atory right. Joel said to Julia, “She will be giggling at that story tonight as well at 11.” That wasn’t mean at all. Julia was laughing at a story about the pig kissing or something. Very approproate. Joel is one of the most refreshing news anchors I have ever worked with. He is honest and fun and really doesn’t what ahyone thinks. He just wants to make people laugh and enjoy things. Jackie always laughs along with him. Julia is just very newvous on air and probably is not used to Joel’s casual anchor style. Joe Rose always jokes with Joel and loves him to death. But, Joe pretends to be hurt by it to garner sympathy. As for Paul, he’s a horses ass with everyone..very cocky and very rude and very contgrolling, but he and Joel are great friends as well. I think what you are seeing here is a fun news anchor who is great at all the breaking news and serious stuff, but also knows how to let loose and have fun. It’s something most anchors and reporters at NBC6 are not used to and will have to learn now that Joel is the main guy at our station.

  4. NBC Producer: As I stated above, I didn’t think Joel meant to be mean, but as you said, he is one of the few that uses that type of casual banter at NBC-6. Naturally, this style will stand out like a sore thumb with an anchor with a different delivery. The most I’ve seen Julia and Jackie do is chuckle back to one of his jokes and then move on; they rarely joke with him as he jokes with them.

Matt and Meredith joke all the time on the Today show, and it seems more natural since there’s an equal balance – one person isn’t “picked on” much more than the other.

While I am not obsessed with Joel like many on this board are, I actually like Joel and most everyone else on NBC-6 a lot, and have stated it many times. Despite this observation, I still think the post-Segreto NBC-6 is very strong, and I think NBC-6 made the right choices with its current lineup.

  5. I understand what you are saying. I think Jackie and Julia are not as good as you may think. Jackie can’t adlib at all in breaking news and neither can Julia. They both need a TelePrompter. Joel can adlib. He is the best we have for breaking news. He often says, don’t bother with the prompter and he just refers to notes from our assignment desk to do breaking news. I think Jackie and Julia aren’t sure how to respond. I think they need to be more casual in order to be better anchors.

  6. Joel was acting kinda weird when he was reporting the Hudson crash some 2 weeks ago. He was talking a mile a minute in front of the chromascreen and it appeared he had red marks covering his eyes. Just want to bring that up as he wasn’t acting normal then either.

  7. Hmmm. I can not believe how many people on this site try and bash people, even when they are doing a fantastic job. Joel did an excellent job that day. He is a pilot and he is from New York and he descrived what that plane was dealing with as it took off from New York. Stephen, maybe English isn’t your first language, because Joel speaks very well and very clearly. Wasn’t acting normal? Do you know Joel? What is normal. Do you mean, he was actually reporting well, unlike some other stations in this market. Red marks covering his eyes? Hmm, come on. Sounds like you need a new tv. In HD it looked great and I would love to hear one nice thing or one intelligent thing that wasn’t hateful said about people on TV in South Florida. R people really so insecure that they have to write something on this blog becasue they don’t have anything better to do? Go ahead, attack me, but at least I work in the business.

  8. Let me begin by saying that I think Joel Connable is one of the best if not the best male news anchor in Miami. He handles breaking news with grace and makes an everyday newscast better with his presence.

Let me continue by saying I watched recently a CNN report on companies leaving false positive remarks on on-line websites where comments on a company’s business are invited. For example, managers at a Hampton Inn Hotel were caught saying on-line that the Hampton Inn is “amazing, a great place to stay”, etc. They then also bashed their competition in the same sentence.

Eerily similar to this site. NBC Producer, you obviously work there. If you are in fact Joel, please stop! Most people like you so you don’t need to give yourself props online. NBC Producer, if you are not Joel, let me say that you are actually making it worse for Joel. In my newsroom, and I hear it’s the same at NBC6 too, it is a running joke that Joel is posting all of this about himself.

Joel you are good. Let it go!

    • Let ME begin by saying i hate when people make accusations. I do like Joel Connable. “NBC Producer” does work at NBC6. What was your first clue? The “NBC” part… or the “Producer” part… Now, can you guess what he or she does at NBC6? Thanks to the magic of IP addresses, and e-mail address, i’d like to let you know that “NBCProducer” is not Joel Connable. I know who “NBCProducer” is… In fact, from what co-workers of his have told me, Joel doesn’t even READ these sites. Thinks they’re silly or something. You can rest assured that Joel Connable, a lead anchor at NBC6, has lots of better things to do, then go on news blogs and compliment himself. He’s good enough that others (example: NBCProducer) go on these sites and promote and defend him.

I’m amazed at how one little comment can throw this whole post off into another direction.

  9. Probably since everyone who was ever on TV in Miami is now in New York. I usually watch CBS2 (WCBS), who has Lonnie Quinn & Megan Glaros… but tonight I am watching 4 New York (WNBC) since it’s on after the Super Bowl, and man! DeMarco Morgan… Tom Llamas. Everyone that I already know!
