  1. Here is my view on how the local stations did in covering the story.

WFOR by far had the best coverage. They didn’t start until about 11:45 (at least when I saw them) and Michael Williams was anchoring with Stephen Stock reporting in the newsroom. Great anchoring, great coverage! Joan Murry Was out in the field, early in the 12 o’clock hour.

WTVJ was sharing their chopper feed with WFOR. Bob Mayer and Trina Robinson were on it from the beginning, they did a good job, but their interviews had terriable sound quality. They wer simulcasted though for about 5 minuets on MSNBC! Willard Shpeard called in from his cell phone, and Nick Bogert first called in then was set up for a live shot by 12:45.

WSVN did pretty good, they had good guests and a reporter on the scene from the start. They might have been first with the news, not sure though, WTVJ might have gotten it first, as the crash happened during their 11AM show. But WSVN did have the first reporter on scene, cant remember her name.

WPLG only broke into the View intermittently during the view, going into full live coverage at noon. They did not spend the entire noon hour on the story though, as I saw other news being reported as well.

All stations ended their coverage at 1PM.

    • and yet if you look at the wfor screen capture above, they have a banner which reads 5-6 passengers on board. way to put up incorrect information before you know the facts. yeah wfor’s coverage was stellar as usual. nothing a few more layoffs won’t fix i’m sure.

      • The police were providing the information on the number of passengers on board. And the other stations reported this as well, if I’m not mistaken.

        • i can only speak for wtvj, but they reported it as uncertain, possibly five or six. they certainly didn’t put it on a super as if it were a fact. wfor has always rushed to get info on the air first and check it second. ask shannon high.

      • Thats too harsh, all the stations were reporting 5-6 passengers. Thats the info that was being given to the stations.

  2. it was close between 4 and 7…but i think 7 got it first. while 7 was first reporting it, the 6 folks were still (literally) dancing on the set…

  3. WFOR’s chopper was down… they called and asked WTVJ to share their chopper… a way to test the waters pre-chopper sharing agreement.

  4. I don’t think it was necessarily “a way to test the waters.” WFOR and WTVJ have shared before under similar circumstances or during big stories that required keeping the chopper up for very long periods. WSVN and WPLG have had similar short-term deals involving their helicopters.
