On February 3rd, WTVJ’s news director announced that all of the freelance per diem reporters are being let go. That means Joshua Landon, Claudia DeCampo, and Gary Widom will all be gone soon. From what I understand, here’s what happens: NBC hires what are called “YOH” employees. Now, i’m not quite sure what “YOH” stands for, so please comment if you know, but essentially, you are a per diem reporter, paid by the hour, without medical benefits. For some reason, after a certain amount of time, the per diem reporters have to leave and most “YOH” reporters can’t be hired as staff. WTVJ’s news director is trying to hold on to them for as long as possible, in order to allow time to hire new staff reporters. No final date has been set for when they will leave.
Yoh is the name of the company that handles freelancers for NBC across most platforms. I worked at CNBC but was technically a Yoh employee with barely any benefits. There’s a lot of worrying and hand-wringing from Yoh freelancers because after 12 months, you either get hired as a CNBC employee or you get cut to part-time for 6 months then can work full-time again, something like that. I left before I had to deal with that scenario.
You should have used the Google before writing this post, though…a quick search does wonders. http://www.yoh.com/
Not really a tremendous loss – Landon and Widom were blah reporters without much presence. Claudia Docampo was the best of the three and actually halfway decent. It’s tough that they’re letting her go, though – she was given a lot of the top reporting assignments, and their staff is looking pretty skeletal these days. Let’s hope these three can find new jobs soon, and hope NBC-6 hire some great talent and don’t cheap out.
Does anyone know when (if?) Patricia Andreu is coming back from maternity? I miss her Going Green reports.
Watching Claudio Docampo was like watching Night Of The Living Dead. Absolutely no personality and no reason whatsoever to keep watching after the first 3 seconds.
Going Green can just keep going as far as I’m concerned. This kind of stuff is feel-good fluff that does nothing. YMMV.
Yeah, Claudia wasn’t what I’d call perky, but she is certainly competent and knows how to report.
I’d put Charles Perez with WPLG in the same category. A little blah in the personality category, but otherwise not bad.
what happened to alex’s post?
Mods here edit and pull posts…fyi
It’s too bad NBC isn’t keeping Claudia, Josh or Gary. Hopefully they can get on with another station in the market. As for critiques of their work… you can see it on nbc6.net, and as of Friday they were still on the air. Does anyone know how long they will be at the station?
#1 I am the real peaCOCK!
#2 I hate YOH Girlfriends….they give you no benefits
Curious as to who are the 3 producers at NBC6 South Florida Today?
I sent a segment idea to one of the on air talent and was told it was forwarded to the “3 producers” and haven’t heard anything?
Thought I would send the idea direct.
Any help with this?
