Former NBC Exec: NBC May Put ‘Leno’ at 10:30pm, Move Late News to 10pm

Stop the presses!

Garth Ancier former NBC programming exec thinks, thinks!, NBC may put Jay Leno’s upcoming show at 10:30pm and have local affiliates move their 11pm newscasts to 10pm! Leno’s ratings according to WaPo’s Lisa De Moraes drop after his monologue and Leno himself has said publically they’re thinking of ways to make the audience stick long enough for the late news so the station’s newscasts won’t be hurt.

Meanwhile Conan’s ratings are hovering at around 2.5 million viewers a night, lower than what Jay Leno had and lower than Dave Letterman’s. In the money demo however Conan has 1.3 million viewers while Letterman has 1 million.

  1. If the Peacock went ahead with that decision, it could potentially change television in the United States, forever…

  2. Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could’ve told anyone that, let alone guess it myself. Yes, that would be a smart, and gutsy move. This idea’s been brimming in my head every now and then. This way, Conan has a strong lead in, and rules out the option of viewers going to bed after Jay Leno. Then again, Conan can try to make The Tonight Show better, and not focus too much on “Late Night with Conan O’ Brien” humor. It’s all about the monologue, and wit. And, there’s Conan’s humor too, every so often when needed.

  3. The 11 pm news has lousy ratings, at least with WTVJ, so who really cares. Bet Joe Rose would like getting home earlier, so he can get more sleep for his moring radio show.

  4. This is a good idea. It would screw WFLX in Palm Beach, but just the same that’s fine. I dont know what gains WTVJ could make on WSVN 7 or CBS 4’s News on My33.

  5. I don’t see Leno’s show lasting too long. I personally don’t like him as a comedian, and he’s not camera-friendly. I think he should just retire…

  6. Dumbest idea ever! NBC will tank because the FOX stations that air news at 10pm rule and sadly this will hurt NBC more than help. I just wish Ed Ansin didn’t give into NBC and air the show. At least he can now bring it up again.

    • You’re right about Ansin. Though, that isnt true about all Fox stations, maybe in Miami. In West Palm Beach tho, WPTV will dominate ratings no matter what happens. However, WPTV did approach their owner, the EW Scripps Company about talking to NBC about this Leno show around the same time Ansin announced he would not be airing it

  7. Brandon, You don’t think Leno is any good ? For many years he beat Letterman every single week in the ratings! He’s a ratings winner! Thats why NBC is paying him 30 million a year, even more then Conan. I bet, you didn’t like Seinfeld either…lol

    • Leno was great, on the Tonight show. I think his new show will be a terrific success like Katie Couric’s CBS Evening News was a terrific success….for like a couple weeks.

People wont give up their dramas and nightly routines that easily. Conan is still the winner here, his ratings are OK and he got the Tonight Show which will always be around. Leno, no idea how long that will last, and Jimmy is just about the worst person even and his ratings are shot. I hope NBC did not sign a long term contract with him.

  8. I said Conan would BOMB. I mean I like Conan, but I just don’t see him apealing to the masses like LENO did. However I agree Leno may pop at first, but will fall quickly. As for WTVJ moving to 10pm 7News WSVN would crush them. My33 would get crushed by NBC6 WTVJ.
