ansinsportscomplexOn February 14 this year, the Ansin Sports Complex opened in Miramar.

Ed Ansin and his brother Ron donated 24 acres to the City of Miramar to build the complex along with $1 million dollars to help cover construction costs. The land itself was valued at $2.4 million dollars in the year 2000 when the donation was made.

The complex is dedicated to the memory of  Ed Ansin’s parents, Sidney and Sophie Ansin, who were one of the first land owners in Miramar. They started buying land in 1951 which was mostly cow pastures at that time eventually ending up with 2000 acres (3.1 square miles)

Ed Ansin is himself into sports. Interviews often mention his love of sports. He regularly swims, exercises and walks.
From Miami Herald story:

I’ve always been into sports — played basketball until about 30, then went into racquetball — so this place is special to me and a wonderful way to honor my parents,” Edmund Ansin said.

The complex features a football field, running track identical to the one in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and soon to be certified by the  International Association of Athletics Federation. There is also basketball, and even a cricket practice facility. The 9000 square foot community building features computer and game rooms, rec room, press box, therapeutic whirlpools and concession space. Next to it is also a 5,000 square foot playground.

The complex currently has 2100 seating capacity but the bleachers can be expanded to 7000. The City of Miramar hopes to attract national and international competitions. Former Olympian Ato Boldon is helping with that part, his foundation Born 2 Do It is headquartered at the Ansin Sports Complex.

  1. Hmmm, I lived up the street (Hiatus Rd) from 2001-2006. That area is developing rapidly in the last few years.

  2. I’m always amazed at how generous Ed Ansin can be to total strangers, while at the same time being so abusive and exploitative of the people who work for him.
