Glenna Milberg’s Advice to a reporter: “It’s Not About You”

WPLG Local10 Reporter Glenna Milberg

In her latest blog post Channel 10 reporter Glenna Milberg has a bit of advice for a certain reporter from a certain station who while reporting on the crane accident that happened in Miami might have shared her own point of view a bit much rather than report the facts.

The unnamed reporter lives right across from the accident site. Elliot Rodriguez mentioned she did before tossing to her and she acknowledged as much. In her taped report she again mentions living close by and grabbing her camera to tape what’s happening. Then at the end of her life shot Elliot Rodriguez asked her what went trough her mind as she witnessed the event.

Milberg didn’t think it was appropriate for the reporter to include so much “self-centered verbal debris” (I saw, I taped, I called, I felt etc..). Stressing she means well, she offered her advice: “explain, unravel and find out what went wrong, how, why ….” Milberg didn’t mention the station or the reporter.

We’ll just make a wild guess, based on the post, that the station is WFOR and reporter in question is Natalia Zea. And the video report in question can be seen here

  1. Hey Glenna,
What a gigantic hypocrite you are. It ain’t about you either.

Unbelievable. Ch10 reporters have blogs so we can get their opinions on news stories? They don’t even hide their bias any more. It’s all on the Internet. Someone must of told 10 blogs were getting hot, so they better jump on the bandwagon.

Get off your journalism high horse hypocrite. We don’t care what your opinion is. Close your yip and give us the news. We want real journalism, not opinionism.

I checked the link. Nice blog. They don’t let anyone post anything to respond. I guess they don’t want a flood of posts pointing out to her vein hypocrisy.

  2. touché!!!!
I’ve seen plenty of Glenna’s reports she could use a few pointers herself. Talk about bad reporter sterotypes I’ve never seen a chick work her skirt more to get a story. Channel 10 reeks of “self centered verbal debris” Look at all those stupid promos they run trying to convince viewers how journalistly sound their talent is…and all that fake post story banter….it’s a joke. Someone pleae bring back Rad

  3. Ummm I think Glenna is a hot milf – I would like to get her and Lynn from ch 7 together for some three way action….

  4. I commend Natalia for trying to tell a good story and offer her perspective. I can also understand Glenna’s thoughts.
However, Glenna and I both came from the school of 7 and the era of Rick Sanchez where the reporter always inserted themself into the story in order to tell it from a unique perspective. I’ve seen Glenna do it before. I’ve done it. Heck, most of the market has done it. It’s what makes Miami Miami.

In hindsight, perhaps Natalia could have couched her involvement a little differently. Perhaps it would have been better off the top to talk about hearing the giant crash and snapping some photos and video… and then letting the photos and video speak for themself in the body of the pacakge…. with a chyron that says it was shot by Natalia.

Look, it’s just local news… it’s not some high-brow network newscast. Natalia gets an A for effort and B for execution. Glenna sounds a bit too high and mighty… because everyone on Miami TV has done it before.

But the most important observation I want to offer on this public cat fight… if that perhaps if Glenna felt so strongly about what she saw, she should have PRIVATELY called Natalia and offered her thoughts… instead of putting them on the web for the world to see.

    All the best from Bogota…

  5. I tend to agree with some of what Brian has to say, but “it’s just local news” seems rather dismissive from someone who spent a good chunk of his career doing it, and was among the biggest show boaters out there.

  6. Glenna works for Channel 10. Isn’t that the station that paraded one of its photographers on CNN this past weekend to explain how he happened to be near a hostage situation and took pictures of the dramatic events? Does that make things all about him? Not really.

Same for WFOR. 1:40 into the coverage Zea made her first mention of her involvement. “I happen to live right across from this site. From my home camera, I shot video of construction workers breaking their way into the house to rescue their co-workers, and I snapped photos of more workers running to help.”

That was it in her story. She did what a good reporter would do and sourced her pictures. The source happened to be her.

When asked, at the conclusion of her report, what was going through her mind, she answered Eliott’s question. “Really, I was just wondering what happened. I called 911 because you could tell it wasn’t good, there were people running around and there was a lot of debris and dust everywhere I figured somebody must have been hurt, and with that happening close by it does make you a little worried that they have these cranes around you and so many people in Miami do live next to these cranes.”

This is what rattled Glenna’s keyboard? 13 paragraphs on this? Shame, Glenna. It’s just less than professional to bad mouth your colleagues and not even have the stones to name names. You’re a better person that that.

  7. Bad move by Glenna. This coming from just someone that likes to watch news and is not in the business. Tisk tisk

  8. Since my reply is still waiting on moderation back at Glena’s blog, i decided to post my bit here.

Is this really necessary? There are plenty of reporters that “loose” themselves in the heat of the moment. This reporter may not have come off as a shining example of journalistic professionalism but this doesn’t merit an entire blog post about it. The reporter simply mentioned that He/She lived nearby, Plenty of reporters have said far worse on Live TV during less frightful situations.

  9. statement for glenna people who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones
my ill start posting the real reason some people have retired or been let go and more to come. isnt this the same station who had the obsession with bill camal ummmmmmmmmmmm stay tuned same bat time same bat channel

  10. Come on Tv mike, spill the good stuff. There are too many TV sycophants on this site. We want blood and guts!

What are you saying, the ND is going to hire Kamal to be the new education reporter or will he be the new prison reporter or will he be on the teenage boy, child molester beat?

The unwashed masses want to know!

  11. Glenna is one of the best left in this market. Brian in Bogota was and is a horse’s petoot, typical of someone who should do their whole career at 7, the DingDong schoolhouse of TV. What they do isn’t news. But where to turn in this market? You pick and choose folks like Glenna and Putney at 10, Hetal and Bogert and Ari Odzer and a few others at 6, some at 4, even 7 always has a couple of class acts who escape. Overall, the whole market drank Rick Sanchez’ Gatorade because of the large audience of illiterates who tune in. Why would they advertise luxury cars on 7 News? Only to draw dimwit rappers, not anyone withan education, I assure you. Glenna was right in this case. This isn’t Ashleigh Banfield wearing the soot of the WTC on 9/11. This was a local trying to “personalize” a story which wasn’t all that personal. NZ isn’t bad, just one error in judgment likely at the direction of a buffoon producer.

  12. Natalia has issues of her own to deal with. But Glenna, with all the cuts at 10 these days, why are you attacking WFOR? I mean — it’s one of two stations in the market that would even consider hiring you when you get dumped by WPLG.

You may have just shot yourself in the foot with this one, Glenna.

  13. Interesting on Glenna’s blog comments are enabled but there are none posted. Perhaps Glenna doesn’t like the comments that are being made on her blog and is censoring them?

  14. glenna hates all the woman in the biz. she doesn’t think any of them deserve to be where they are. if your young and inexperienced, look out, milberg will eat you up like a matzo ball.

  15. Probably because her face looks like Mr. Ed. Sorry to be nasty, but she is tough on the eyes. She also looks like she need to eat some food.

  16. GLENNA,

PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. YOU’RE A JOURNALIST. RIGHT?

WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE YOU’RE “HIGH AND MIGHTY?”

WHY DIDN’T YOU SIMPLY CALL NZ AND OFFER SOME CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE, RATHER THAN BLOG YOUR CONCERNS?

  17. OK Glenna your actions were beyond petty. Inquiring minds would like to know, what is the real problem that you have with Natalia? In my opinion if you were presented with the same opportunity, you would have conducted yourself in the same manner.
