More Details on WPLG’s Move and DTV Transition

9

A TVnewsday article today details WPLG’s DTV transition plans (reg. required) and move to a new studio.

The interesting bits are that Channel 10 bought Ikegami SD/HD cameras and those are going to be one of the few things that will be moved to the new studios. But it looks like there will be no Local10 News in HD until the move and live reports will be in SD for some time due to the costs associated with upgrading live news trucks.

WPLG and WSVN will have their digital transmitters on the same tower, a new one, both stations will be putting up soon.

WPLG GM Dave Boylan expects the new building to be done by December of this year. Equipment will be installed during the first three months of 2009 and the first staff will be in the new building sometime in April 2009. All staff will work from the new location by June 30, 2009.

  1. It appears that WPLG will broadcast local SD for well over a year after WTVJ started broadcasting local HD, and almost 5 months after analog goes away. How sad is that?

  2. theoneandonly: As a viewer, I don’t really care about ratings. I do care, however, what the picture looks like on my HDTV.

WPLG-DT’s local content looks like crap, as it will for the next 12 months. WTVJ-DT’s pic looks fabulous. End of story.

  3. theoneandonly: The “other viewers” that don’t seem to mind watching a picture that looks like crap are idiots. They wouldn’t know HD if it came up and bit them in the butt. How sad is that?

Of course, most people that are watching Channel 10 (giving them those ratings) are probably still watching in SD over Comcast. How sad is that?

Finally, a lot of the readers of this forum _do_ mind (based on the posts I’ve seen) that WPLG (and most others) stretches/distorts their digital pic.

7, 10, 4, 17 (whenever it comes back on the air), and 33 are all doing a disservice to the community by purposefully distorting their digital picture in order to make uninformed people think they’re watching “HD”. All because they can’t get their act together to provide true, local HD content. How sad is that?

  4. Why is Charles Perez an anchor at WPLG? He has no news background or training. He was a talk show host and fired from every news job he had. Random question…

  5. They made Charles anchor because he brings in huge numbers in Wilton Manors and South Beach in the Freddie Mercury demo.
