10’s new bird is finally flying the South Florida skies. The new copter is faster than the older one, has better crash rating, and hovers for longer period of time. Lots of pics on WPLG’s site but no video unfortunately.
Local10.com – I-NEWS ONLY: New Sky 10 Debuts
It’s a nice chopper, I like it. Now, if you guys go into the pictures that the Local 10 website has, theres a whole bunch of equip. Somone please explain to me what all that is, and the big white thing at the front of the chopper. Please!
Snore……
I’m gona take a stab at this
Front white thing is easy – gyro camera, it rotates 360 degrees and has something like 300x zoom stabilizer so you don’t see the shaking from the chopper.
There’s another camera on the tail, not sure if that one moves or not , pointed forward with some of it catching the big 10 logo on the sides.
The other white thing on the chopper belly is the antenna to, I guess, connect with ops back at Channel 10 newsroom. Probably microwave antenna.
The gray things on the skids is for floating on water, hopefully.
The black equipment in the back of the cabin is obviously what they use for sending and receiving video and talk with the station.
One of the monitors must be for the photographer to see what the station is airing, and the other for the gyro camera.
There’s also a camera pointed at the pilot and one pointed at the photographer and one at the empty seat next to the equipment for reporters who very rarely fly the chopper.
If you watch CNN pipeline you can catch glimpses of either pilot or photog of the stations they like to send a shout out from time to time 🙂
It has been flying for sometime now. They are based out North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines and i have seen both choppers for sometime now
Admin, thanks for clearing that up for me, I had no idea what all that stuff is, and quite frankly, I have no idea how they keep track of all that stuff! lol
WPLG rocks! wish i worked there!
