More Leaving WFOR

44

Tipsters are saying more WFOR reporters are not being renewed or leaving the station.
One is Nefertiti Jaquez.

Another tipster says Brian Andrews hasn’t been to work in two weeks and that he left WFOR. Two other unnamed reporters have not had their contracts renewed.

You could say the new bosses are making changes

Update: Tipster says Brian Andrews may be headed to CNN.

  1. Brian Andrews is going to end up on a network. He is an extremely talented reported. He proved that in the Hurricane Katrina reporting. WFOR is an idoit for letting him go. Now for Nefertiti she started out good. She’ll end up either anchoring one of the other networks down here or may end up going to LA. She has the personality to end up in a place like that.

  2. she’ll anchor at another network or go to LA?!?!?! yeah and Max Mayfield will begin anchoring World News Tonight!

  3. Truth is WFOR is making drastic job cuts. If they keep this up they probably won’t have any staff (an obvious exaggeration).

  4. my info is that Nefertiti is leaving TV biz to go to law school, I can’t remember which one, but it is an Ivy League school… might be going the Santiago route, become a lawyer, then come back to tv… (hopefully she won’t do the playboy detour though!)

  5. Brian Andrews is typical of an SVN alumni who’s smug and not-too-confused with facts. Good choice at CNN, he can reunite with that other paragon of dumb, Rick Sanchez. I feel so vindicated that Killer Rick has been vilified by Keith Olbermann and Jon Stewart. Must be doing something brilliant to get on their radar screens to be mocked. Back to little Brian…could he be a victim of WFOR’s new dress code???

  6. Brian I heard was hired by ABC. Nefertiti I think is leaving South Florida all-together. Rumors are that Andrews might work at 10 then go to Network…and that Ms. Jaquez is leaving for law school and will report wherever she ends up. As for the two un-named reporter/anchors who are out, we are waiting to hear.

  7. 4 is just having some serious issues right now. EVERYONE is leaving. and they’re 2 more to go. soon there ain’t gonna be nobody left over there. 7 is my favorite anyway. but that neffertitti girl is so feakin’ HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. 4 is just having some serious issues right now. EVERYONE is leaving. and they’re 2 more to go. soon there ain’t gonna be nobody left over there. 7 is my favorite anyway. but that neffertitti girl is so feakin’ HOT!!

  9. Lest I forget, yes Nefertiti is tremendously attractive, and in the V biz, looks covereth a multitude of sins. In this case, I still think Nefertiti has it upstairs, and I will miss her greatly. At least she doesn’t have to coast by on her looks.

  10. Like i said i would not be surpise if if she ended up on another station. If it is true that she is leaving the news biz all together to go get her degree in law than congrats for her. But if she is let go than i would not be surpise if another local station tired to get her, even offering her an Anchor postion.

  11. We need to hear from someone at WFOR. Why the bloodbath? What is the real story? It sounds like a Soviet/Maoist style purge! The people want to know what is happenng!

  12. DA REAL STOR-E
Dave Malkoff is off to LA. Pamela Wright is leaving the BIZZ. Mike Kirsch was fired. There are rumors Danielle Knox isn’t coming back (that’s why Joy Purdy is working AM). If this is true; their loss. Mark Henry was fired for new gal, Yomury Cruz. Poor him because she’s horrible. She’s not young and green; She’s old and green. Nefertiti Jaquez is gone. Her last day was Friday. Her desk is cleaned out. She’s going to law school and reporting part-time. Then there’s Brian Andrews^he hasn’t been around. But he was on the radio today filling in for Jim Deafede on AM-radio.

If that weren’t enough, Art Barron is getting the pink slip. He’s telling people “maybe” Ohio.

  13. V-Hound.

Who are you to criticize? First of all, her name is “Yomary Cruz” and she does a pretty good job. She’s attractive and intelligent.

You have a lot of nerve. I hope CBS management finds out who you are so they can FIRE YOU! Rat.

  14. i liked mark henry – i am a big fan of his whenever he is on Majic 1027. I’ve never seen Ms. Cruz but I have some resentment feelings towards her beacuse I know she replaced Mark Henry who was FIRED. That dosent sit well with me.

  15. “David,”

Awwwww my poor little baby. You have “resentment” because Cruz replaced your favorite traffic reporter 🙁

I’m soooooo sorry my little bambino. Now go in the corner like a good little boy, suck on your pacifier, and wipe those little crocodile tears. DUDE GROW UP!!!!

That’s the stupidest comment I’ve ever read on this blog.

  16. Did you happen to see this morning’s newscast miamiwatcher? Cause if you did, your star, Ms. Cruz looked like she was doing amateur hour – she didn’t have her microphone on and had to have one of the other anchors come over and turn it on for her. Her delivery is horrible too.
They fired Mark Henry for her? No wonder their morning news gets hash-marks in the ratings, it’s unwatchable!

  17. I tried to add to my comment last night but the computer kept telling me i could only comment once every 15 seconds even though it was 10 minuets later. I honestly have never seen this new traffic reporter so I cant judge her. Im sorry you feel like my comment is stupid, but I dont like to see anyone fired. The same thing happened when Mark Schumocker was demoted – everyone on this blog began lashing out on Calvin Hughes, even though he is a good anchor. And I never said mark was my favorite traffic reporter, personally I prefer Karen Curtis down in South Florida who will be off NBC 6 eventually too. If you guys want to see a really good traffic reporter, watch WESH in the morning where I am in Orlando, Danielle Belini is the best. She was on Regis and Kelly a few weeks ago for the spring break shows and hse has the best energy I’ve ever seen in a morning personality. I will now go in the corner and cry for Mr. Henry. I am curious though, is he still doing traffic on Majic during the day????

  18. To The Haters,

Haven’t some of you made mistakes? Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot. You’re perfect and holier than thou.

You say, “She needs work,” “Her delivery’s horrible,” “She’s this…she’s that.”

Here’s a thought. Maybe Cruz is a little nervous and adjusting to her new job. Maybe there are people in her newsroom who are so concerned about losing their OWN jobs, that they don’t take the time to help her.

You can’t blame her for M. Henry’s misfortune. That’s absurd. What do you all want her to do? Quit. Call up M. Henry and say, “Come back to WFOR.” You see, you all fail to realize. It doesn’t matter what you think. All that matters is the opinions of WFOR management. They obivously like her. So while you’re criticizing, she’s going to the bank, cashing her pay check, and planning more ways to succeed in her life.

Yomary Cruz, always remember, “When you’re on top. Other people want to pull you down. They have nothing better to do with their sorry ass lives. Therefore, they anonymously bash people like little children, rather than focus on their own imperfections. They’re jealous. Ignore them and keep achieving.”

  19. I hate to rain on the parade, but who cares about a traffic reporter? This is the most useless information in all of TV regardless of who is on camera. Who actually watches traffic reports and acts on it? If you are in your house watching TV what does it matter? The only time it may matter is if a road is shut down perhaps. But if you have to drive on I-95, you drive on I-95, right?

Here is my traffic report and feel free to use this 5 days a week. There will be heavy traffic in the mornings and late afternoons on I95, 826, 836 and 595.

In regards to the intelligence of traffic reporters; you don’t need a high school education to be a traffic reporter. It requires nothing more than perhaps a basic working knowledge of English, the ability to stand upright and opposing thumbs.

  20. I concur with Bobbie except for the opposing thumbs, towit Jen Herrera. A cheap shot, I know. Maybe we undervalue this service because we readers of this blog know enough not to watch TV in a moving car. Maybe the local stations do reach people in thier cars, so it is a valid service. Remember the good old days when the all-news stations ran in the AM and PM drive, with stuff like traffic, sports, news etc.? That’s where traffic reports belong, not on TV, dammit!

  21. Maybe when every one under the sun is bashing a talent, it’s actually because the person is unbearable to watch. You can try and blame nervous management, technical difficulties, or anything else you want… but sometimes the anchor, reporter, traffic personality just isn’t talented.

  22. miamiwatcher,
obviously you are either Ms. Cruz herself or related to her – otherwise, you simply can’t possibly defend her amateur-hour traffic reporting. Really, WFOR can’t be seriously expecting anyone to watch that morning news on My33 and not laugh out loud at how terrible it is.

Not a hater, I have no personal bias – just stating the facts here.

  23. Mr. miamiwatcher, ur hating on me. all i said is i have some resentment towards her b/c i thought henry was a good guy and dont think he deserved to be fired. i didnt try to bash the new lady, i cant b/c i’ve never seen her, and even if i didnt like her – i probably wouldnt bash her. but you bashed me and called me a baby b/c i stated my opinion. whos the hater now?

  24. So Mr. Andrews is STAYING not going.
Ms. Jaquez is brainy and HOT.
Ms. Cruz SUCKS when it comes to talking about road closures.

Looks like: everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Just don’t be spiteful and mean people! Some talent you’ll like and others not. So who cares! We’re all here to blog and voice our minds. Right?

  25. Here’s the deal. It’s her first week on the job and people on this blog start bashing her. It’s really unfair.

I have never met Cruz. But I’ve seen her a couple times and she’s not as “bad” as you all claim. I love how the talent you all criticize, continue to advance in their careers, renew their contracts, and achieve.

David, you don’t know why Henry is no longer with WFOR. You also don’t know if he was “fired.” In addition, you’re commenting on Cruz, and you’re never even seen her.
Give me a break. You’re in Orlando.

And like I said, regarding ALL the hateful critics on this blog, “…It doesn’t matter what you think. All that matters is the opinions of WFOR management. They obivously like her. So while you’re criticizing, she’s going to the bank, cashing her pay check, and planning more ways to succeed in her life.”

  26. Mr. miamiwatcher – i never commented on her directly i merley stated that I resent her (meaning I wont watch her) b/c Henry was fired for her. According to Mr.V-hound (i have no idea what kind of name that is) he was fired. I did mention that I have never seen her and also i never commented on her directly. We are all here to voice our opinions about the news stations and their talents, if people say they dont think shes a good traffic reporter – i dont see a problem with that. Ms. Cruz is employed with WFOR so she must know that people will like her and others will dislike her, thats what happens when you put yourself in front of a camera. However, you called me a baby for stating my opinion, if people on this blog harass eachother for their opinions then people wont want to come back to this blog. I dont have a problem with you defending her, however I do have a problem with you being nasty with your fellow bloggers, you read their opinions and then you respond in a truthful, polite way, something you havent done.

  27. Hey mamiwatcher. I can’t speak for everyone, but I think my opinion is far more important than the opinion of anyone at WFOR. In fact here comes my opinion now!

Watching their news is harmful to my brain and retinas. My doctor told me if I continued to watch WFOR or even worse, UPN 33, I’d go blind and become an imbecile. He called it the “Cheeze Whiz” of TV news. I thought that was cruel because it was a slap in the face to all tasteless processed foods worldwide. He suggested switching to watch Sponge Bob, Barney instead or that cable channel that has all the community events listed.

And I wouldn’t say everyone who gets bashed here goes on to advance their career. Some just get plain fired and need a job. Some women go out and get a set bolted on. Some guys go out and get estrogen injections. Some go to “law school”. Some go to “explore other opportunites”. Some add a vowel to the end of their name. So it really varies as to what people go on to do.

You need to relax. It’s a blog, it’s the Internet and it ain’t serious.

Also..FYI miamiwatcher on “she’s going to the bank and cashing her checks”. You may want to suggest direct deposit. Much safer. This is Miami after all.

  28. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Everyone just stop bashing one another. Really…. let’s sit down and gossip and blog. FOR FUN!
So it looks like Brian Andrews is staying. Nefertiti Jaquez is off to school and what, will she report too? Is Dave Malkoff gone? What’s this I hear about Art Barron?

  29. All I know is that Nefertiti Jaquez is gone and I’m sad. If Elita Loresca goes next, I don’t know what I’ll do.

  30. As a wise man once said, “Mickey Mantle wouldn’t pay your rent, so why should you pay his?” (slightly paraphrased) Can you name that movie in 3 notes?

  31. Wow. I read this post on TV SPY.com this morning. It is very insightful. Bobbie check it out.

    Just an honest assessment

    Apr 5, 2007 9:46 PM EST

There was once a powerhouse of a television station that had the competition sweating and looking over their shoulders.
    CBS 4 in Miami.
In years past it was once just a feeble blip in South Florida ratings diaries and overnights when people remember it as WCIX-TV.
In 2001 Shannon High a highly respected news director and Steve Mauldin a James Caan type character hired some talented anchors, reporters, producers and photographers, took some chances and literally turned the station into gold.
But after five robust years of
doing remarkably well in the ratings war, WFOR has struggled the past year to keep afloat.
    Other dynamics are at work.
prime time programming, network lead-ins, and the re-vamping of a competing station WPLG the ABC affiliate.
Most people laughed when the G.M. of WPLG announced the station was cutting back its late afternoon news one full hour…
and surgically place Dr. Phil as a lead-in to its 6:00 broadcast. It worked! viewers confirmed they didn’t need 90 minutes of repetitive news, which consisted of stories that had little to no relevance to the viewer.
But something else happened, for the first time WPLG’s 11:00pm news pulled out ahead and stayed there.
Call in the pricey consultant cried WFOR’s G.M. who has since been shown the door.
The same G.M. it is claimed, who got rid of Dr. Phil because it cost the station too much money to run.
But the problems went beyond that…there were also cosmetic ones.
Management whether it was corporate or local didn’t want to spend the money to purchase new DVC tape playback machines
and for many months stories sometimes several a day would fail to play on the air because of mechanical problems.
The problems went on for a long time… reporters often seen tap dancing hoping to see their report on the air, only to frustrate tens of thousands of viewers to the point of switching stations.
There is a direct correlation… news packages freezing up on air on a regular basis and then lackluster numbers.
No one will admit that led to part of the erosion of the audience because corporate brass would raise eyebrows.
I can tell you that it played a role.
Anyone in television will tell you once you’ve lost viewers on a consistant basis it’s very difficult to bring them back. Habit has already formed.
Even now questionable decisions are being made.
Managers are under a timeline to improve numbers or else.
The problem is trying to do more for less, for example, neglecting problems which required a little money when tapes wouldn’t playback on the air.
Unfortunately hiring people for low wages will not produce results, it will only add to the problem.
It’s called the “dumbing down” of television news. It’s happening at many other stations as well and at an alarming rate.
Consultants in general won’t admit that because they have an agenda, plus they want to stay on the corporate payroll, so their research is not always truthful.
The viewers see right through this.
Like a pitchman at a carnival attraction trying to lure you to a ring toss… viewers know when someone is desperate for a buck, you see it in those trashy promos…or little banners which are seen during a story reminding us that at 11:07 a breast cancer breakthrough is announced.
People aren’t dumb… they don’t want to be flim flammed…so when they realize the hype is only to bolster ratings to make more money…our greatest commmodity is lost…it’s called trust.

  32. Woah! And I thought I knew brutal people. Man you guys are a tough room. I’m not defending or citicising anyone except to say that all of you who think brain surgery is easy should get a hole saw and try it, otherwise let the pros do it because, even bady done, it’s better than YOU can do.

  33. Insider,

Hate to let you know, but Elita’s contract is up this year (end of summer I think). Now maybe she’ll sign a new deal, but none of the last 3 of her predecessors (Jackie Johnson, Amy Murphy and Pamela Wright) did, they were all 3-and-out (and all eventually ended up in L. A., though Pamela returned to Miami). And since Elita is from Southern California…
Watch her re-sign w/ WSVN just to make me look stupid lol

  34. Hey Mexican Newsman,
You aren’t seriously comparing brain surgery to TV news are you?

By the way, where are your immigration papers Mexican Newsman!

  35. Traffic has gone to pot on Miami televison. What’s up with WFOR’s new traffic girl? She’s terrible. Also, NBC 6 has added some girl along with Karen Curtis who’s been there forever. That new girl is really rough too. Also, have you checked out Lauren Lane on WSVN? She is the bomb when it comes to doing traffic. That’s why they’re #1. It’s just too bad that the weather girl with the bolted on chest gets 5 minutes to talk about sunshine and the traffic people only get a couple seconds to talk about huge accidents affecting thousands of people.
