WTVJ drops Tony Segreto from 11pm newscast

26

Madness… got 10 emails in half an hour about this switch. So here’s the news:
NBC6 have allegedly made a decision to drop Tony Segreto from the 11pm newscast leaving him to anchor only the 6pm. Not a huge surprise but Michael Williams is the new weeknights anchor. Joel Connable takes weekend evenings.

This was a rumor has been going around for at least a couple days I think. And there seems to be a disagreenment whether it’s a done deal or something the suits at 6 are thinking about doing. But with all the hoopla and emails I thought I’d throw some oil in the fire and see what happens 🙂

Good move on NBC6’s part? If you are a viewer do you care? Some of the local newsies are probably very happy about this. There is/was some displeasure from having Segreto anchor NBC6 main newscast because he was a sports anchor before that and didn’t have much journo cred.

Update: the change is permanent. New promo with the weather guy and Michael Williams will be released soon probably just in time for the new graphics package.

  1. Well i’m surprised of TVJ doing this, LTV23 also dropped its main 6/11pm anchor (Guillermo Benitez) from the 11pm newscast and was replaced by a Univision Network Newscast Chief Correspondent in Texas (Enrique Teutelo), although there’s no relation w/ TVJ’s decision i thought LTV was nuts in replacing a SFLA news personality like mr. Benitez, and now mr. Segreto, it seems they’re getting rid of all the old farts down here, who will be next? Dwight Lauderdale maybe?

  2. im not from flordia but do go down there every 4-6 months for bout two weeks at time, less during school BUT!! Tony is the reason I dont watch thier evening ‘casts, I just dont like him, nor do I like Jackie. I always thought Martha was appr. for 6&11, do most of u agree? Prob not. haha I think this is a start, like they’ve been doing in the past, changing things up so its not the snooze channel anymore, slowly and surely there makin good changes.
and frank as for lauderdale, i like him, i hope he stays up, him and laurie have chemistry, better I think that Jennings and Lorch do but it wont surprise me if hes out within a year and replaced my lorch.

    thats my side…

  3. I don’t mind Tony. Jackie was the one that needed to go. And God help Channel 10 if Matt Lorch ever becomes a main anchor.

  4. It’s great to hear about the changes at NBC6! Now I get to see Joel Connable on a more permanent basis. It was long over due. Time to add new blood to WTVJ. Too bad they did not choose Joel over Michael for the 11 pm newscast. He would have been a better choice. Oh well…in due time!

  5. I agree. All Tony does is shout. I wish They would take him off of all programing. Julia Is the best choice to replace him.

As for Dwight I would like to see him gone also but Lorch is not a good choice to replace him.

  6. I look that they are gettign rid of Tony.LIke Admin said, he’s a sports guy and more suitable there. Jackie should follow him too. I love Joel better than I do Michael. Michael looks like he’s asleep. Joel has great talent but I guess we still get more of him.

  7. Joel would be a benefit to any NBC 6 newscast. He was great here at CBS 2 and KCAL 9. I was also watching his reporting during NBC 6’s Hurricane Wilma coverage and he did very well. To be honest what TVJ is doing as far as their look is sad because the current look is better, except for the black background. The graphics package that KNBC and other stations use are too colorful and the fact that the peacock logo is colorful. I know people are going to disagree with me who live in other markets where NBC O&O’s use the same package, but this is my opinion and I am going to stick with it (like you will do the same with your opinions).

  8. UMMM…! …Jamboii, I personally believe Joel really looks like he’s asleep, maybe because of his eyes color or he needs to open his eyes a little more when looking to the camera but i wonder how he would look like surprised :), Michael i believe has a problem w/ his left eye i don’t know if it’s a birth defect or something but it’s just w/ his left eye, Joel does a good job but i don’t see him achoring the main 6/11pm newscast soon, and Jackie would look better anchoring Today in SFLA as she’s more commercial type of journalist and could fit best in the mornings.

  9. I don’t watch the news at 11, but I like Joel so much better than Michael. Joel should get weekdays, Michael should be fired, and they should hire someone new for weekends lol

  10. I think Joel is terrific. I don’t think he gets enough air time at WTVJ because I don’t think management knows what they’re doing when it comes to consumer reporting. As far as Joel’s eyes go, I think he just has bedroom eyes as their called. I know the girls love that. Ladies..any opinions on Joel’s eyes or his look? I saw Joel anchoring in Los Angeles and his eyes look perfect. I think Channel 6 has very bad lighting that cast shadows on people’s faces. They need eye lights in the desk which I know they do not have.

  11. i’m sad to see tony get his time cut back. i’m a fan of stability, not change for change’s sake. as far as this joel person goes, he looks like he is always half asleep and as a result puts me to sleep as well. yawn!

  12. That’s unfortunate for Mr Segreto. I am hearing that WSVN is also getting rid of their busty weather gal Elita Loresca. Anyone have their ear to the ground on that one? And where did Meryli Mitzel land after getting tossed like salad from SVN? No wonder they are the hurting kind with the community and ratings.

  13. Frankly, I like Tony Segreto in the evening and enjoy the dynamic between him and Jackie Nespral. As for a sports guy with no jounalism cred, really…NOBODY on the air is Walter Cronkite, but then its about image isn;t it afterall no matter what is said about “getting it right”!!

I agree that Joel Connable has this sleepy-eyed look that is somewhat distracting, not good for a person who is charged with delivering the news. Michael Williams, perhaps a bit of a Tom Brokaw wannabe…can’t believe I just wrote that but, yes, I did…getting back to Tony Segreto, I for one, appreciate his stamina and positive attitude during the hurricanes we’ve all experienced during the last few years and watch him almost exclusively during those events…ciao for niao

  14. I am very sadden that Tony is being dropped. He is another part of South Florida we are discarding. He will be missed by many. I will be finished with Channel 6 news as I do not like Jackie and have tolersted her for Tony. I have written my displesure with her in the past. You drop Tony and keep her. Another bad decision. He was a local boy who did good. Just a nice story and a very deserving person.

  15. I think Tony does a solid job. His longesvity in the South Florida market in matched by just a few people. We need that stability here. Viewers like seeing that constant because it shows credibility. When the Hurricane came this way I turned right for Bryan Norcross because he has credibility. He took us through Andrew (with Segreto please note)so that’s why I turn to experience with someone I know. Segreto is the same way. You want the facts you turn to Segreto.

  16. It’s too bad that Miami local news pretty much sucks all the time. I just moved here from New York where they actually do stories that matter to people. Guess what? They actually have a City Hall reporter – go figure. Do they even know where City Hall is here in Miami? I can’t stand Channel 7 – a bunch of liars with sensationalism and death and destruction in every newscast. I think Channel 10 and Channel 6 do the best jobs. Channel 4 tries to look good, but when they break in with Breaking News saying Tom and Katie are broken up – who allows this??? Someone should be fired. What do you people even want in local news? I don’t think any of the station’s do a great job. I do like Tony Segreto, I hate Jackie. I do like Maggie Rodriguez but I thin Laurie jennings and that guy Lauderdale are jokes. I like that guy Joel Conable. He’s real. He doesn’t take himself too seriously which is good. It livens things up for us bored tv viewers?

  17. I’M UPSET ABOUT THE CHANGES FOR TONY. I REALLY ENJOYED HIM ON THE 11:00 NEWS. I PERSONALLY THINK THE CHANGE IS GOING TO AFFECT NBC NEWS RATINGS.

  18. There isn’t channel in South Florida that gets it right. If you compare this market to the rest of the country our news SUCKS, from the anchors to the reporters. All they talk about are killings, accidents, and hurricanes. They start covering hurricanes 2 weeks out, then take off regular shows to watch someone on a sunny beach waiting for it to get here, what a joke. I was flipping channels, and thought Tony was gone, which is a good thing, bout time. Next up Dwight Lauderdale, Craig Stevens, Belkys, Laurie, and god please Lonnie Quinn this guy was on soap operas, now a weather man…LOL. I need to get direct TV.

  19. Tony Segreto is as much a part of South Florida as sunshine. Having an anchor who is identifiably a Florida institution is a great value for continuity and substance. True that Tony lacks the jouro creds of someone who started out in news but these days, does it really matter. The anchors are generally not Cronkites or Murrows. The anchors should be likeable, listenable and engaging — Tony is all of that. I have looked elsewhere for my news but still enjoy his Spirit of South Florida series.

  20. tHE BEST QUESTION IS WHY? YOU DID NOT FAZE HIM OUT, YOU JUST OLIMITATED HIM. IT WAS SO OBIOUS.

HE IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE IN ALL THE FIELDS HE REPORTS ON. HE LOVES SPORTS.

I AM NOT SAYING TO KEEP HIM AS THE LEAD, BUT HE IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABED ON MANY THINGS, AND COULD BE USED AS A VERY KNOWLEDGEABER INDIVIGUAL IN AL FIELDS.

i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY? HE IS A LEADER.

  21. I vacation in south florida and loved watching the 11pm newscast on channel 6….Tony was beloved….now there is some robot on. As for Lonnie Quinn in the morning…what’s up with that?! Bring Tony back…he lends credibility and stability to a very transient area.

  22. In South Florida if you are latin, black, and female you will get an on air job as long as your attractive, just look at Nickie Mohan on ch10….oh god, one of the worst ever!!! Jackie on WTVJ is a good newsreader but, if shes on the spot and has to interview or question someone without reading it word for word on paper, shes in big trouble!! As someone else mentioned here, Julie Yarbough is clearly the best that WTVJ has to offer. She is very well spoken & if she was latin too, she would be the lead anchor , but its all about politics and being as many minorities as possible, with latin being no.1.
