NBC Layoffs May Hit NBC6

8

Today NBC announced they are firing 700 people and according to TVNewser and RadarOnline 220 will be from 11 local NBC owned and operated stations, of which WTVJ-NBC6 is part

RadarOnline’s John Cook says it’s unclear how NBC will distribute the cuts in staff, but even if they split it evenly across all 11 stations that’s 20 people per station.

Cook says the cuts will be made to news staff, no specifics if it includes behind the scenes people or also on-air. Not something NBC6 needs to hear right now when they’re hurting in the news department

NBC says the layoffs are part of “TV 2.0” and the freed resources will be moving to their digital (read internet) ventures!

  1. There will be no layoffs at either TVJ or WSCV. Locally the area affected will be Telemundo network in Hialeah. The biggest changes are in New York where MSNBC will be moving to 30 Rock & some of it to the CNBC building in Englewood Cliffs. The other big changes will be in Texas, California & Arizona where small market stations will be losing their local news operations in favor of a regional one. In Texas, all operations will be out of a Telemundo Production Center in Dallas.

  2. I think they will use this opportunity to remove Tony Segreto from their anchor desk and make some other changes to their reporting team. Hopefully they are smart about their decisions and not end contracts with their veteran reports (Ike Seamen, etc.) and replace them with unknowns like WPLG has been doing lately.

Maybe Joel Connable will FINALLY get the promotion to Main Anchor he totally deserves.

  3. I think you are right. We had a big meeting yesterday about the layoffs. It look slike Tony is gone. Seamans may be gone as well, including Nick Bogert. I think you all heard Lonnie is leaving for New York. He wasn’t let go though. Good for him. Weekened newscast are number one. They get rating over 5’s 6’s and 7’s at times. I wonder if they will move Joel to some other newscast? They had him anchroign the 5pm and we were number one on that day. I think they should make him the acnhor of a new 5:30 newscast.

  4. GOOD BYE LONNIE QUINN!!! South Florida will not be missing him in the morning.

He is the MAIN reason why I do not watch NBC6 in the morning.

    On another note…

Let’s hope WTVJ People is correct with his/her statement about Joel Connable having the opportunity to anchor a weekday newscast. I just wished it was the MAIN ANCHOR position. If he is doing so well with ratings on the weekends, why not “bank on him” and make him the #1 choice to watch NBC6 M-F at 5, 6 & 11. Hell…he could also anchor the early morning, mid-morning and mid-day newscasts.

I would love to see an ALL JOEL CONNABLE news station at NBC6. I would drop everything for him!!!

    Joel is the best!

…and I must say that I don’t even know him in person. A good friend that recently left NBC6 was kind enough to get me a signed picture of Joel that I have framed in my bedroom! He’s a hottie!

  5. Joel may be a little tired doing all that. I can tell you from working with him that he is one of the nicest people I know. He isn’t used to his true potential at NBC. He has to deal with all sorts of screballs at our station who don’t know anything. I don’t think Joel wants to be the main anchor. I asked him and he said he would love to anchor a 5:30 newscast or something liek that. He loves to report and he is the best live reporter I have ever seen. I know he is given a tough tim by some managers in the newsroom who think he’s too outspoken. Joel has some great ideas to make local news better. But, most of the people at NBC6 have no interest in changing anything. As one manager said the other day, “we shouldn’t change a thing. People just don’t understand what they need to see on local news.” Idiots…

  6. I think Joel is great. He should run for president, cure cancer… heck he may even sigle handedly end the war in Iraq. With his dreamy eyes he could lull the immigrants to sleep and keep them from coming in. I know he’s got a plan to help rescue social security, medicare and medicaid. He can do all that without showing his cape and still remaining the calm mild manner anchor reporter he is at NBC 6.

  7. OK, I like the Joelmeister. If he wants to stay, he should be a frontliner. Nespral should go, Williams should go back to network and be a correspondent, and Kelly Craig needs more work. NBC6 has some very good pieces but they are being assembled by someone who is clueless. And for God’s sake, Tony Segreto is one of the best one or two sports anchors this market has ever had. Throw Joe Rose back to the jock pile and allow someone who knows what they are doing to run 6 sports again! Guy Rawlings is excellent too, but Kuperstein is an arrogant punk and needs to go too. Cefalo wants to work part-time and would work well with Tony as he has in the past. Both Segreto and Cefalo have netowrk-level ability in sports, so NBC can use them for other assignments, because I know how tight money is at GE. Cripes.
