  1. So what this means is that Bryan Norcross is still the King. Anyone who got through Andrew knows why. I also think David Bernard is a worthy successor, and Pamela Wright and the rest of their crew know their stuff, and deliver it well. 10 is next and I am sure it is entirely due to Don Noe, though his team looks pretty weak to me. Guaraldi is a real pro, but the cheerleader (Glaros) is no help, and someone needs to tie Trent Aric’s hands down. It is no secret that 7 is a joke to me, but Phil Ferro is surprisingly good, and even if Elita Loresca never got another forecast right, I wouldn’t care. (Sexist? Sorry. Just human.) Paul Deanno at 6 is going to get better numbers down the road…he is just unfamiliar to the market so far. He has a terrific delivery, and Ryan Phillips, Trina Robinson, and John Gerard are all very watchable and knowledgeable. Is there any way we can vote Lonnie Quinn and Megan Glaros off this island?
One more thing. Anyone complaining about media sounding the alarms too much, just shut up. This could have been bad. Real bad. We got lucky. I can’tr recall hearing any alarmist stuff this time, and I watched them all, even 7, so I commend them all for their restraint. THe same idiots who complain about the media coverage are the ones who waited until the last minute to buy water, gas, etc. Shut up, grow up, and please practice contraception, because you really should not breed.

  2. bad?
not like it was a fat hurricane barreling towards us for 3 days. WOuld’ve been a Cat 1 at best.

The bloggers over at Weather Underground called days before it hit as weak. And they were right

Short term memory problem? Yes a Cat 1 could have been bad. Remember Katrina and the damage in Dade county. Even Wilma only brought Cat 1 winds in Dade and Cat 1 winds to most of Broward with the extreme northwest sections getting Cat 2.

Look it up on the NHC page.

  4. If you look at the Monday ratings, rather than Tuesday WPLG dominated and won almost every time slot after going into continuous coverage. Too me that is more telling as that is when people were looking for information and starting to prepare. Tuesday people started to hear and realize that Ernesto (thank goodness) would be pretty much a non-event and starting flipping around…more than likely to look for regular programming. The numbers spike on certain channels at typical lead in times. For example WFOR spiked in time for Price is Right. WPLG stayed on through out the night as well and beat Leno and Letterman.

Who do you think had the best graphic package through out the coverage…both news and/or weather.

My vote (unfortunately) goes to WPLG. Best look for news and the weather graphics have improved so much over the past couple of years. They are really easy to understand, clean and they seemed to have more variety. Also, the radar seems to be capable of doing more. WFOR and WTVJ’s radars look like old Atari machines.

    Looking forward to your responses…

  5. Im a regular at Dr Masters blog on weatherunderground…they werent all in agreement. There as no alarmist talk; you want alarmists? see Sally Fitz and Rick Sanchez. They coverage was straightforward weather forecasting and information.

I stick with CBS 4 and WPLG. Cant stand Ferro’s voice and WTVJ isnt the same since they demoted Segreto. Trina Robinson must go.

  6. I almost agree Ralph, but if Trina must go, it’s to my place, and my wife will be ticked, but…she’s a class act and a good trooper. It was also nice to see Tony and Kelly Craig paired up. Just needed Norcross to have a full Andrew flashback. Kelly and Trina are great bad girls when they do mornings together. Lonnie and Nespral must go. And take Glaros and Jen Herrera with them.

  7. I watched each station’s coverage for a good chunk of time during the storm coverage. I agree with ccc in that I liked seeing Tony and Kelly together. I’ll take the two of them over Jackie and Julia and Michael any day. On the down side, besides John Gerard, 6’s weather team inspires no confidence with me, and Deanno comes across as arrogant.

I was watching 10 on Monday night when they did an “Ask Don.” He didn’t know the answer and didn’t even take a stab at an educated guess. He then turned to Dwight and Laurie and asked, “What do you guys think?” With me, Don Noe was up there with Bryan — until that moment, even if he was just being honest in not knowing.

My opinion of Ferro is the same as Ralph’s. He doesn’t belong on an English-language station — period. And the rest of the weather team is sketchy at best.

On 4, I thought Bryan and David were good, and to me, Craig Setzer and Pamela Wright made for the market’s strongest AM-shift duo. I probably watched 4 the most.

What was interesting is that EVERY station did the double-weather-anchor thing this time. In the past, I think only 10 and 4 did it.

  8. I was watching 7 and 10…. and actually I watched 6 for a little bit too. lol I think they all did fine… I mean they all overdid it, but they were expecting it to be something more than it was and hopefully people will still prepare next time.

  9. One name is missing in this discussion: Elizabeth Hart. Was she on a already-planned vacation and therefore unavailable, or has she left WFOR? Not that 4’s coverage suffered without her.

  10. Ok I’ll bite. I have been removed from TV for about a
year now and that has given me a chance to site back and watch all stations from home (or at least try to).

WFOR: Norcross was good during Andrew (the only one not knocked off air; so the only choice) but the feeling I get in the public is everyone is tired of his scare tactics and “this one is coming straight for South Florida” scenarios. David Bernard, not impressed but in my opinion a step up from Norcross on the daily forecasts. Rest of the team is solid but a little dull. Also will take a forecast from Elizabeth Hart way before one from Glaros. Overall solid performance overall during coverage; up there neck and neck with WPLG in overall coverage (again my opinion).

WTVJ: Paul is smooth on air and sometimes too smooth/perfect, comes across very arrogant. Paul also has no degree in meteorology. Something he shares with another chief in Ferro at 7. R. Phillips is solid. After that with Lonnie and Trina…again no meteorological training. John Gerard has lots of talent just not utilized properly at 6, it is a shame too.

WSVN: Read above about Ferro’s weather knowledge, but wouldn’t help anyway can’t stand to listen to his voice. Like nails on a chalkboard. Jonathan Novak, not a fan of his on air presence, seems to know some weather, but just rubs me the wrong way and from what I hear he rubbed Tom Johnston the wrong way too. Remember the fist fight!!! Elita is Elita, silicone and makeup. As far as Cameron is concerned, just really really dull and boring. Like watching and listening to a cardboard cut out. Not familiar with any other weather people from this station.

WPLG: Don Noe has been around a long time. Good on air and non alarmist, probably the number one reason I watch WPLG alot during storm coverage (along with WFOR…old ties). His backup Trent Aric is solid and easy to watch, but it stops there. Glaros is the bottom of the foodchain as far as weather talent in South Florida. They always pull the red headed weather girl to report during the storm and John Guiraldi just pops up occasionally, although when teamed with Megan during this storm he really showed us why she has no credibility.

  11. ccc229

You have expressed your love for Trina many times on this website including you saying you could “listen to her read the phonebook”…wierd. Can you explain what the attraction is. She is smooth onair and comes across likeable but I just don’t get it…not a meteorologist and not attractive please explain.

Also, reading above, agree with comments on Glaros and Ferro…but curious what did you mean by “tie Trent Aric’s hands down?” Wondering what I missed.

    Thanks.

  12. I just think Trina Robinson is a fine broadcaster, and also happens to be quite attractive. She’s also pretty sharp, so I don’t feel quite so piggy in my gleeful support of her. Trent Aric always seems to over-gesture and often prefaces his statements with directions to sit back, relax, and let us explain this to you. Just shut up and do it. It’s as if he keeps sneaking up on Don Noe hoping to trigger a career-ending health event so he can move up to the number one chair. His ambition is a bit too transparent to me. I am surprised at how well David Bernard has fit in. Norcross clearly has an eye for on-air talent, in addition to all his other broadcasting abilities. I will always be grateful to him, Tony Segreto and Kelly Craig, the troika who got me through Andrew. The videotape of those 12-15 hours during that storm should be mandatory viewing for anybody who wants to be a broadcast journalist. Tony’s taken a lot of heat for his sports background, but in that event, his humanity was a real asset. I should also mention that Bob Mayer and Pam Giganti are also a better team at 6 than the three rotating on their prime time shows, and Joel Connable paired with Kelly is pretty damn good too.

  13. Just wanted to let ccc229 know a few things. I work at 10 behind the scenes and work with Don Noe and Trent Aric daily. Trent may have ambition but it is not at the expense of Noe. Everyday he is learning and shadowing Don soaking up every bit of information he can. Trent is very humble and not once stepped out of line (to my knowlegde) as far as who is “in charge”. Everyone at the station admires him for that, he seems in no hurry to take over. Don and Trent actually have an amazing rapport. Don will be the first to admit Trent has taught “the old dog a few new tricks”.

I will agree that with the new team weather concept and the promos 10 has running on air, the feeling is that Trent will one day take over and to some who have watched Don for so long, that may ruffle some feathers and seem like Trent is pushing Don out. Which is not the case.

  14. For me the best coverage had it nbc 6 and telemundo 51. John Morales is by far my best. He has lot’s of experians and knolege of hurricane he has work in the national hurricane center in Puerto Rico. Also a famous Meteorologist in Puerto Rico. nbc 6 Paul Dianno with his team did and exelent job and do not forget the hurricane expert there. Last both station were great becuase there are in the same studio with great meteorologis in them. I think Felipe Ferro (phil) should have stade in Telemundo he was better there than in that station that he is now.

  15. 6 has a hurricane expert?! when has deano (nice guy) weathered hurricanes?
clearly people didn’t care much for what 6 had to offer or else they’d have something more than 4.6 rating

  16. I did leave out 6’s hurricane expert, Jim Lushine, who is very knowledgeable but a little too professorial. I am so sorry for not giving the shoutout to the original and alltime master, Dr. Neil Frank. Mr. Crewcut was the best. Also, those old hurricane hunters, Walter Cronise and Bob Weaver…got to miss them this time of year.

  17. I somehow missed this discussion and just finished catching up, WOW! Everybody is being nice, its very pleasent. Someone mentioned the 12-15 hours of coverage of Andrew with Tony, Kelly and Bryan. How can I get my hands on this? Any suggestions?

Here is the perfect anchor line up to me for Ch 6

    Mornings – Willard Shepered/Jackie Nespral
    Mid Morning Show – Jackie/Tony/Kelly
    Noon-Tony/Kelly
    5-Tony/Kelly
    6-Bob Mayer/Jennifer Vallopi
    11-Bob Mayer/Jennifer Vallopi
