Charles Perez New Weekend Anchor at WPLG

10

Charles Perez will be the new weekend anchor at WPLG. He’s replacing Matt Lorch who left for WHDH and who was moved to weekends after anchoring WPLG’s weekday 5:30pm newscasts and occasionally substituting for Dwight Lauderdale. No idea when he’s starting at 10 but he’s leaving WABC September 9.

  1. first they drop their 5 and 5:30 newscasts, which don’t do that badly in the ratings. now, they shoot themselves in the foot again by hiring charles perez, of all people.

when he was here, he was easily the worst anchor in the market. his monotone delivery is horrible!!! i’m not surprised he didn’t “click” with viewers in new york. what surprises me is that wabc ever thought he would.

put him together with the trying-to-be-dramatic-but-not-quite-pulling-it-off neki mohan, and you’ve got quite an awful combination.

there are a lot of good people out there who’d love to work here. i don’t understand how some of these lousy people get hired. maybe it’s money. maybe it’s name recognition that’s valued over all else i don’t get it.

  2. Someone needs to keep the sharp implements from Dwight Lauderdale, Michael Putney, Glenna Milberg, Diane Magnum and the remaining few coherent folks at 10. Charles Perez fits nicely with Kristi (The Stepford Anchor) Krueger, Neki, Julie Sommars, Jen Herrera (no, she isn’t worth a full adult name), and even Will Manso. The good thing about Lorch leaving is that Manso will be the only remaining Eddie Munster lookalike at 10. 10 will continue to spiral downward while being run by a 7 alumni. Obsession with ratings ahead of journalistic ability is putting the cart before the horse. If anyone decided to go back to the old way, i.e., Ralph Renick, Ann Bishop, etc., eventually the ratings will come. It’s too profitable to pander to the incompetent and ignorant in the audience.

  3. “obesession with ratings”

…umm..DUH…this is a business after all. the goal is to make money. i know we all want to have lofty expectations of the news media, but they’re all out there to better the bottom line of whoever owns them. sorry for the bluntness of the answer, but its the truth.

  4. Charles Perez is an attractive, well- spoken, anchor with a nice delivery. You writers and producers sit behind your computer screens, “trash talking,” and slander reporters and anchors in the Miami market. Don’t you have anything better to do with your time? Give it up! I wish Charles Perez the very best of success at WPLG!

  5. What is up with Jen Herrera anchoring the noon newscast. DO you think she will be replacing anyone and if so who , it seems like 10 has been grooming her for something. As for her name i too have tried to figure out why she does not use her entire name. it seems to cute and i can not respect cute while listening to her talk about the war….. I wonder how 10 plans on turning this little girl into something serious…. So far nothing about the 10 morning news is serious….

  6. Duh, insider, if these news guys would worry about building long-term with solid journalism, rather than flash and “breaking news” which has already been fixed, they would have the kind of long-term success they seek. I do not object to profit. I object to obscene, obsessive profit at the cost of everything else. Your kind of attitude is rife with the kind of logic that elected (maybe) an incompetent to the White House for two terms. Put another way–Fox News Channel does not compete with CNN or MSNBC. It is all-opinion, all the time. It probably competes more with Comedy Central–at least it does in my house. As for those of us sitting in front of our computers, guess what? If we are news consumers under the age of 65, these news operations had better pay attention to us, because no one else seems to care to watch them. I close with a question: when did it become the job of news operations to help us “stay safe?” It is almost supplanting “breaking news” for frequency of use in all media. The Herald, Sun-Sentinel, 4, 6, 7 & 10–I dare you to go a whole day without giving us “tips to stay safe.” Enough pandering to panic already. It applies to terrorism, hurricanes, internet usage, kids watching TV…jeez! More Ann Bishop and less Mary Poppins, please!

  7. You can always tell when an anchor is improving…..the folks here will then attack their looks or name……amazing. I for one have watched as Jen Herrera has improved her delivery and overall presence on the air. She has shown tremendous growth and WPLG is right in working with her to create the future anchors for their station. She co-anchored with Will Manso a few times and they truly complimented each other..this is a team that could work well for PLG.

Charles Perez is a welcome addition….by the time her left SVN he had grown to be an excelent anchor…..he let his personality come out and was far better then having Charles Billi with his attitude coming through…..If anyone needs to go it’s Neki who still looks uncomfortable and nervous as she “reads” the news.

  8. Well obviously one person’s great anchor is another persons not so great anchor! Hence the Perez situation in NY. I like that Neki Mohan. She has a great voice and comes across as warm, doesn’t at all seems nervous to me! Jen Herrera is improving and the station is giving her all the right tools to do so. I think Charles and Neki will be a great team!

  9. I like Perez cute and out soo #*##able. I also like the Nikki Mohan. She is representing us Caribbean folks. I think Perez will make a better anchor than Marr Lorch. Not clicking in another market does not mean you’re not a good reporter/anchor. Laurie Jennings could not click at MSNBC but has her place in South FLorida. This is also the case among others. I am hoping Ducis Rodgers will have the same fate and end up back in South Florida. I like him.

  10. nice guy… good look… but what does he know about politics locally? putney. bogert. milberg. but perez? you’ve got to be kidding…
