Geraldo comes to South Florida

Broadcasting And Cable is reporting WSVN has reached an agreement with FOX to carry Geraldo Rivera’s new show “Geraldo At Large” beginning December 26th with a 12:30am timeslot.

Interestingly WSVN has kept the option to move the show to 4:30 pm in the fall of 2006 assuming it survives that long. Why is this interesting? Let’s put two and two together.

In the fall of 2006 WSVN loses Judge Judy to WPLG. That leaves 7 with a gap from 4pm to 5pm which could be filled with news. My theory is that 7 would have a half-hour newscast at 4pm followed by “At Large” from 4:30pm to 5pm. It remains to be seen if that’s a good idea though, in November sweeps Geraldo At Large had a measly 2.3 ratings average, hardly the Judge Judy lead-in power.

If my theory pans out, it will be an uphill push for 7 if WFOR moves “Oprah” to 4pm and WPLG has Dr. Phil at 5pm who could give them an even greater boost for the growing 6pm newscast. It remains to be seen whether South Florida will want news or therapy at 5pm.

  1. one thing though… WPLG can’t put phil against oprah.. she bankrolls his show and one of the stipulations is that they can’t compete directly… so watch for 10 to put Judge Judy on at 4pm (where it is now on 7) followed by Dr. Phil at 5pm….

  2. I was talking about 7 competing against Oprah at 4-5pm by having a newscast at 4-4:30pm, then Geraldo then news. And then dr.phil at 5-6pm and WFOR’s Oprah lead-in

WPLG will presumably get a great lead-in to their 6pm newscast from Dr Phil.
