Rick Sanchez is returning to the news-anchoring desk, if only temporarily. Starting Wednesday, Sanchez will be filling in for Martha Sugalski as co-anchor of WB39 News at 10 p.m. Sugalski will sit in for Pam Giganti as weekday anchor for WTVJ-Ch. 6 at 5 a.m.

(WTVJ produces the WB39 News in its Miramar studio. The Tribune Co. owns WB39 and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. WTVJ is a news partner of the Sun-Sentinel.)

Sanchez won’t be quitting his day job, though. He will continue as host of his morning talk show on NBC 6. “I was asked to cover Martha’s spot while Pam [Giganti] is on maternity leave,” he explained. “And given that I have always enjoyed doing news, and have a little bit of experience with it, I told them I would be happy to help.”

Sanchez, one of South Florida’s highest-profile TV anchors, left that role at WSVN-Ch. 7 in May 2001 to take a job at MSNBC. There he served as an anchorman and reporter until his South Florida return in October 2003.
