Tim Geraghty, the new news director at WZZM-TV (Channel 13), is happy to be back in West Michigan.

Geraghty, who started last week at WZZM, is no stranger to the area. From 1989-91 he was news producer of the 6 and 11 p.m. news broadcasts at WWMT-TV (Channel 3) in Kalamazoo.

Most recently, Tim was vice president and news director at WTVJ-TV in Miami and was part of the management team that moved the Miami station to first place in the local ratings. But he was eager to return to Michigan.

“I met my wife, Mary, in Kalamazoo on Thanksgiving night at a Big Brother/Big Sister event in 1989,” he said. “It is important for us to come back to this area because we have so much family in Kalamazoo and Chicago.”

He hopes to bring some of his Miami magic to WZZM.

“Newscasts should be a mix of stories — what the public wants to know and what they should know — a blend of the two,” Geraghty said. “I’m looking forward to mentoring and teaching younger journalists, and I think it will be a great experience working for Gannett.”

Geraghty, 38, has three girls, ages 13, 12 and 10, and the family is looking for a place to live.

Maybe the person he replaces, former WZZM news director and anchor Cheryl Grant, can help him find a home.

Grant is joining Keller Williams Realty of Grand Rapids.

“My experience at all levels of the television business has helped me prepare for this new opportunity,” she said. “In the television business, we served the needs of the viewers, the customers. In real estate … the customer is the top priority.”

Grant was released from WZZM at the end of June, after 18 years at the station, nearly five of those as news director.

Anchor/reporter Kim Covington returned to work at WZZM last week after being on maternity leave.

“It was great seeing my co-workers again and good to be back,” Covington said. “But I sure do miss my baby. I had him to myself for three months, and the first day back to work, I cried for an hour,” she said.

Jordan Elliott Grant is her first child.
